Microsoft Windows 7 support and sales cutoff dates

I think the reason why they are at this junction is because they were panicking. They nearly missed the tablet and smartphone boat and Apple and Android were taking the whole market.

Now they want to carch up and ruin the PC market in the process. They think they have a strategy, but it sucks.

Yep!; i think u hit the nail on the head with that post there whs; unfortunately it looks like they have taken what they think is a strategy; but really isnt; and that is to try and rush products to market at the last possible moment to try and catch up to the other companies in competition with microsoft. But even with that i will still take microsoft over the competition and i think we all know what the competition is. Not gonna name the company cause the name is a deadly sin here on the windows forums as far as competition goes; lol ;)

I think the fruit people are pretty solid because they keep a tight control over everything - including the apps and drivers. You have to like their prices though.

Android is different. Every Joe Blow can make his own version and some versions are not that swift. It has gotten better over time but there is still room for improvement.

....But ASK YOURSELVES unless you are a Gamer or a hard core "Hobbyist" who likes building things what do you actually USE a computer for these days -- for example I'll bet most of your music is stored on things like Tablets, smart phones, ipods or even stand alone NAS servers, Movies etc are accessed a lot via services on SMART TV's, and a hige percentage of email is done on devices OTHER than computers. Even when you need to print a Network / Wi-Fi enabled printer can print directly from a smart phone / tablet etc or even a Smart TV.
jimbo

My music, games, etc are ALL on a PC, as are all of my photos and photo editing software.
I'd like to watch you edit photos in detail on a tablet. I don't edit movies but some people do.
I have books on my PC rather than a tablet because the smaller print on a tablet is hard for me to read from, and to enlarge the print on a tablet requires one to constantly drag the page back and forth and back and forth to accomodate the larger print. I know because I've tried it. It's a PITA.

The simple truth is that tablets are quite useless for some things, as are touch screens. For those who're heavily into texting while driving, and living in facebook and twitter as well as any number of other non-productive activities, they may find tablets and phones more useful.

That won't happen because they don't make much money doing that. They think they will make more money selling a new OS every few years. And they would except not everyone is going to buy a new OS every few years.

If M$ wants one OS to rule them all, they should make it modular. One could then buy only what they need/want. That way, one could by a stripped down OS, then choose their GUI, any extra portions they may need/want, such as Media Player or Media Center, and not get saddled with crap they don't want.

You cannot transfer an OEM license. They only work on the system where they were originally installed. But you can still buy OEM licenses - at least in the US.

If you look through the list carefully, you will find the fresh hen fruit company still has some retail copies of Home Premium and Professional available. I'm glad I got my copies last year. Based on what happened to XP's availability after Vista came out, I knew Win 7 would become scarce as honest politicians and bought my two retail copies of Ultimate and one of Home Premium (still don't know why I bought that one) while I could before I even had a machine to put them on. I did the same after Office 2013 came out. I didn't like the look of it, the ridiculous pricing, and the insane non-transferability (M$ later had to back down on the latter) so, even though I was happy with 2007 (more like dumb, fat, and happy), I snagged a copy of Office 2010 just in time (caught it on sale, too!).

I do believe that cutoff date is when Microsoft stops stamping any new disks and stops selling them to retailers. The retailers can if they wish stock up and keep selling any stock they have on after that date until they run out though.

At this point in time I'm not interested in buying another Win7 to replace what I have. I just want what I have to work as it once did. My husband finally found me an answer. My problem was that Media Center basically took over my laptop and I could no longer do anything I normally did. Solution: 1.Go into Safe Mode w/CMD prompt; 2.CD\..ENTER; 3.At C PROMPT; 4."operational/features.exe" (w/o quotes); 5.Enter, 6.Locat "media features"; then Uncheck Media Center. I'll keep my Win7 now as long as I can!!!!

Your awesome for reading this.
It's not so easy to move from Win XP to Win 7. Windows XP ran fine in with under 1 GB RAM, and I suspect most boxes come in at under 2 GB. Windows 7 would choke on such a computer. So I don't see XP-to-7 upgrades happening much.

Margrave, I have to prove you wrong on ALL counts. I have upgraded multiple XP Laptops (some 8 years old) running as little as 512MB of RAM to Windows 7 Home and while they run faster and can have more programs open at the same time with 2GB of RAM...they work just fine for Internet and Basic PC functionallity. Power users and Gamers require more memory but 1 GB is just fine for MOST light computer users.

Saying ALL for almost anything can get you into trouble. ;) in this case, I had a five year old XP machine that, according to M$'s compatibility program, was only partially compatible with Win 7. No Aero was the killer point for me (other than I never liked that particular machine); I depend heavily on AeroSnap, something I was able to get on XP via a third party program that, ironically, wasn't compatible with Wind 7.
