Target: 40M card accounts may be breached

Target is grappling with a data security nightmare that threatens to drive off holiday shoppers during the company's busiest time of year.
The nation's second largest discounter said Thursday that data connected to about 40 million credit and debit card accounts was stolen as part of a breach that began over the Thanksgiving weekend.
The data theft marks the second largest credit card breach in the U.S. after retailer TJX Cos. announced in 2007 that at least 45.7 million credit and debit card users were exposed to credit card fraud.

I actually like Target a little better than WalMart, but ALL my purchases are cash only. You should have seen the cashier freak out when I paid for my lappy with cash ($1400). She called the manager to come and HE was a little taken aback and actually a little "short" with me! Like cash was a unheard of and almost unwelcome imposition on his day. hehe..... the evil part of me gave him the last $400 in $5 dollar bills for that When I want something online, I get a prepaid debit card for the amount of that purchase only. I figure the small "extra" amount is a small price to pay for the added peace of mind. I've only found ONE place who didn't take it , Crucial by the way, and only then because I was shipping to a different location than the card was ....."registered?".... to. Was O.K. though, got what I wanted from Tiger Direct , my M4 SSD, with enough savings to cover the price of the card AND an extra 8gb stick of RAM!

Like I said, the evil part of me came out. I get paid in cash you know, and during the season and immediately afterward (bonus, mileage etc.) I sometimes have ........ immense sums on my person. Depending on my Boss, and how he/she wants to pay me sometimes I have literally grocery bags full of cash. (One year my bonus, mileage and last spot pay was all in ONES! Almost $12,000 of them!!! You have any idea how massive 12,000 ones is!!! That manager was LUCKY I didn't give him all of it in fives ..... hehe he kept looking at the $100's and $20's I oh so casually sat on the counter while I counted out those fives......:devil:

The scamers are out in force sending emails and calling. They are asking for information they shouldn't be given proclaiming that they need the information to help the person with their credit card/cash card problems they might have with Target.

This was done by tampering with the machines. If this was the method I read an article about a while back, it had something to do with adding a filiter in the line that captures the data, and the retrieve to get all the info.

If that's the case here my big question would be how did they accomplish it without being noticed and how was it never noticed?


I actually use my Credit Cards for everything but use them more as a debit card paying the bill in full at the end of the month. Rarely carry a balance.
I like it because those rewards add up quick if you use them for everything.


I'm not too worried about all of this. Maybe I should be? I don't know.

Chase sent me a fraud alert a day or 2 ago about this.
Just said they were aware of the issue and my account seemed to be fine but wanted me to double check it. If something did happen, they would close the account and open a new one and not to worry. If there was a issue due to fraud I would not be responsible for the Fraudulent charges.

I've never had any issue like this (in regards to fraudulent charges/stolen cards) but they do seem to be all over watching for potential fraud. Does make me feel better about using the card. They've even called me after a big purchase one time to verify it was me because the purchase seemed out ordinary compared to my "normal" spending habits.

I've seen some people complain about this, but I for one appreciate it. Because it isn't "normal use" for me to make rather large purchases, although I do on occasion.

I would assume most other major banks have similar fraud watches on their accounts.

Lucky for me I do not shop at Target I guess.

BTW.. If there are any identity thieves out there looking for targets, I'd happily trade identities with you instead. I suspect your FICO score is much better than mine.

One of the problems may be they weren't taught to count at school.
