Love affair with Teracopy coming to an end..

I am in the process of re-organizing mad quantities of files, repartitioning drives, setting up all new backups, erasing dups etc..

Anywho... at the moment, I am getting horribly frustrated with Teracopy, with whom I have been having a brief but passionate love affair over the last few days.. Seems, when transferring large folders, Teracopy sometimes just stops.. and stops.. for long times.. and I am not yet clear if this is a windows thing, or a Teracopy thing.. In windows transfer, the same bogus crap seems to occur, but because of the vague progress bar, you never quite really no for sure.. With Teracopy, all the vagueness is gone, and you can see it silently choking on a single small file.. Oh the rub..

I just started a transfer 207gb in size. It is now stuck at 9.6%.. going to give it a few, and will post if it picks itself back up..

In the mean time, am open to suggestions..

Joy.. it took a few minutes, but now it is chomping again.. 9.9% and counting.. any idea why it stops..??

I see.. so you are certain it is a Teracopy issue then. As stated, windows file transfer seems to engage in the same disgusting behavior, but it all gets glossed over, because of the vague transfer bar. I think they intentionally made it that way as a sort of tribute to politicians, to give the illusion of progress, even when there really is none happening, but because the little bar keeps flashing, and the file animation plays, you could swear it is really actually doing something..

If it is a TC issue, then yeah.. I guess it will have to go. If however it is a windows thing, that TC is just nakedly exposing, then I guess I see myself as one who would rather know, than live in blissful ignorance.

So.. I guess they should have called it mega copy rather than Teracopy to denote that it is only useful for smaller files..

I find one version of TeraCopy will fly along at almost 70mbs and the next version update will drop to 36mbs. Others have found this also. I notice the type of file and copying/moving files to same drive or a different drive makes a difference in speed.

One feature of TeraCopy I like is the testing of files for a crc match. At least it reports success or error.

Hey, learned about a new one I missed - Free Utility: RichCopy, an Advanced Alternative to RoboCopy

I have used Teracopy through XP, Vista and no Windows 7 and never had a problem with it. I've copied files in the region of 10 gb and never managed to get it to hang or stutter. On the other hand I've read many forum posts where people are having these kind of problems, strange indeed. Granted, I have now moved to Richcopy when moving really large files, it's faster.

I read an article by Larry Osterman where the sound subsystem and network subsystem affected each other in a very cruel and unusual way.

For all anyone knows, people having troubles with TeraCopy may in fact have driver issues with TC, or internal driver issues that are not readily evident.

All I know is that if the same thing happens with RichCopy, you'd better start digging deep into your OS.

unless I've misunderstood something why not use something like Acronis True Image to move/ copy files -- it operates in "File Mode" as well as "Disk Partition Image mode" and has no probs in moving HUGE files either.

Whilst True Image is actaully a backup / restore program it can be used very successfully for these type of operations (plus you have a decent tool for backing up your system(s) as well.

That's what I was going to suggest. I copied a Windows.old folder over my network to a USB drive in case I wanted anything from it, then deleted from my HD. Around 206,000 files folders and links in that Windows.old. It would have been just about impossible(or at least a major pita) without RichCopy.
