Bulbageddon is upon us

You can't win. And recovering my money with longer lifespan is a joke. The old bulbs cost pennies and lasted 10 years. Now I get a 5 year warrenty for a $30 or $40 bulb. I won't live long enough to break even.

I believe the worst part is the new bulbs do not last as long as advertised,

While CFL are supposed to last longer, I don't mind to much if they go out early for only about $8 a 4 pack.

However, I would be ticked if a $15-$20 LED bulb did that.

These bulbs were very undependable and sensitive to power outages in the beginning,
I don't believe they've improved much in the sensitivity area,
U.S. power is not stable power surges are common place,
I sure the others if containing mercury will be on the chopping block soon as well,
Pure money grab by the gov picking winners,

For me I'd rather spend the extra money and take the chance to get a nice LED light and not that nasty stuff CFL's emit.

I'd rather have the LED as well, but I'm going to hold off for a bit to see how long these things are lasting in real world conditions before investing in them. Hopefully the prices will drop some more on them as well by then.

I don't know for sure, but my opinion is that the environmentalists are over-alarmed about global-warming and all the other stuff. I don't dispute what they are saying about global warming, but I don't believe that most of it is man-made. But, again, it's only an opinion. Who knows for sure?????

That is indeed the million dollar question. There has always been an up and down of temps during the earth's history. It is, however, a valid consideration for reducing energy consumption. Helps the balance of payment for the part that is fuelled by oil.

The only thing that might give you the best chance at reliability of the expensive bulbs,
Is to add a Whole house surge protector,
Then possibly the only issue you might face is defective bulbs,
But adding one of these might get a bit pricy as well because of electricians

No problem there. Already have a whole house surge protector. They're really not too expensive to have added if you don't have to have any other work done to the service panel. Especially if you consider the cost of replacing all electronics in your house.

I may get a couple for now just to see how they do though.

I have had CFL light bulbs that didn't last 3 months. Now find the paper work in order to get a refund. Lot of luck. Who saves the paper work for a damn light bulb.

All CFL bulbs I have seen do have mercury in them. How many people are going to take a bad CFL bulb to a hazard waste disposal site. They are going to end up in land fills by the billions.

It wasn't long ago they were telling us that mercury was going to kill all the fish and anybody that eat the fish are going to all kinds of cancer. How they tell use to put a little mercury in every room of the house. You just have to love these tree hugger global warming experts.

You can use the CFL bulbs outside (porch light). If you live at a place that it gets cold; lots of luck. By the time the bulb warms up it will be daylight again.

Trying to read a book using these CFL bulbs gives me a head ache.

To help with global warming what a joke. Check out the global warming scientist stuck in the ice down in the Antarctica. Even the Ice Brake ships couldn't get to them because their is so much ice.

I do have two LED's and they have lasted a long time. The light once again does not suite me for reading books. They do work good for room lights.

I do have about 30 real light bulbs stock piled.
When I get out again I will buy some more.

BTW, my incandescents never lasted 10 years! Lucky if they went a year. Flick on the switch...FLASH...gone.

Some are gone fast, but many lasted me for years. In this house here I live since 16 years and 80% of the bulbs are original. It is always the same 2 lamps where they blow.


In Germany, I have a lot of the little 12V - 20W bulbs - the ones with the 2 pins. Those go fast. And since I have about 50 of those, I always keep a good supply. Fortunately they did not eliminate those - else I would have to revamp the whole place. Some are in the ceiling. You imagine.

As far as I've seen, the supposed "5 - 10 yr" bulbs last nowhere near that. The power company sent us some for free, which we tried, & they died about 6 months - 1 1/2 yrs later. A couple of them actually cracked when they burned out. Add to the fact they're chock full of toxic chems....

Ok, I replaced the 100W bright white CFL over the kitchen sink with the 60W daylight LED below to see how it goes. So far, it seems to be just as bright, and it's a white light despite is saying daylight. I like that.

I like the look of that bulb, I always go for the warm white but Angie made me replace all the kitchen ones with the cool white light ones (I'm not that keen).
