Along with the start of a new calendar year, the changeover to 2014 will signal the dawn of a new era, one in which rising efficiency standards render 40- and 60-watt incandescent light bulbs obsolete. The new standards will put an end to the Edison creation's century-long run as America's favorite light, and force consumers to turn to newer, more efficient technologies when replacing a burnt-out bulb.

Here in the UK, thanks to various "knee-jerk" reactions by successive governments, we have had perhaps millions of these energy-efficient bulbs given away by energy companies and local Councils. Thanks to several house moves and energy supplier changes over the last 20 years, I now have a whole box of them in my shed. I will never use them all.

Never mind, they will form part of my children's inheritance!:sarc:

As Bertison stated ,Here in the UK it is getting extremely hard to locate an incandescant bulb anymore . The new EE bulbs take about 5mins to reach full brightness I don't like them at all !!!

Over the past three years, I've filled three 20 gallon plastic storage tubs in my basement with 40w and 60w incandescents, because they're the ones most used in my house. I've got enough to last me for a good long time

It's not enough they change away from incandescents, but that the brightest bulb you can get is like 60W "equivalent". Anyone got any good new bulbs to recommend? Something with good light, more towards the white spectrum preferred. I'm looking for specific brand/type, not just a type. A Guy

Hey Bill,

They have 100W equivalent CFL bulbs with bright white available. It's what I use, and they are bright.

I get mine in a 4 pack from Home Depot and Lowes.

Check out Home Depot for a lot of LED lights. The wife wanted some Daylight bulbs in her sewing room. I also use these (60 watt - 830 lumens) in my ceiling fans as they are dim-able and work great. They also come in soft white and 100watt equivalent (1680 lumens)

In Germany we have those new bulbs since quite a while. I stocked up on the traditional bulbs before they stopped selling them. That stock will be enough for the rest of my life.

The problem with the new bulbs is recycling. Some of them contain Mercury which, of course, is very dangerous for your health. And I doubt that people will bring them to the proper recycling yards. That will be a new mess.

But did you see the prices of some of them. They go as high as $50 a piece. In the future you have to mortage your house if you want to buy light.

The CFL bulbs contain Mercury but the LED bulbs do not. You also have to weigh the initial cost and the savings on the usage and life span. The one I listed has a 5 year warranty so hopefully I will recoup the cost during that time frame. I tried some dimmable CLF bulbs but they really suck, and the LED dimmable work great.

Yeah, dimmable CFL are not worth having.

The CFL bulbs contain Mercury but the LED bulbs do not...

...and LEDs contain nickel, arsenic and lead.

Making photovoltaic cells involve a horrible chemical cocktail...
...but they are pretty harmless once made.

Wind turbines solve and create problems.

Incandescents had been banned here for domestic use for a few years now, initially I used CFL's but the light is bloody awful and they take time to get to full brightness, a few months ago I replaced them all for LED bulbs and now I have a nice light that comes on instantly

One thing about the EU ban is that is does state domestic use leaving a huge loophole allowing incandescents to still be sold if the seller is smart and says they are for non-domestic use if questioned (amazon is full of incandescents).
