While developing Windows 7, Microsoft ran a ton of different performance tests to make sure the operating system was an improvement over its predecessors. One of the tests focused on upgrade performance: Microsoft wanted to make sure that an upgrade from Vista SP1 to Windows 7 was within a five percent threshold faster than an upgrade from Vista SP1 to Vista SP1. Microsoft gave three reasons for using the Vista SP1 to Vista SP1 upgrade as a baseline instead of Windows XP to Vista:

Well that's pretty ugly. I was thinking of performing an upgrade the wife's laptop, now I may want to rethink that.

Twenty hours and 22 minutes for a heavy user upgrade on medium hardware. I wonder how many MS testers commited suicide

Nice post 7dreams thanks

I can't agree more than that!

In fact, If I would have a 1.5TB hard drive and one of them, I would have all my data on it. Then, I would say "OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGG how will I update?!" But, If I wanted it, I would be in that category. But that's not the case and there's actually much more data on my hard drives than on Microsoft's tests. Like ~700GB.

And, yes, I'm keeping most of my files on my different hard drives. For various, obvious reasons :

1. Data security.
2. If there's a problem with the OS, a quick copy of the User folder on an other folder and we are ready to go.
3. OS upgrade time
4. No more huge quantity of DVDs

I always prefer clean install for a new version of windows to make it as close to how MS intended it to run as possible. If you have bits from previous versions in the new install, it must affect it in some way.

MS defrag is a bit (yuky as hell) worthless as tits on a bore hog.
Defrag fast and It has never failed me in many yrs of testing.
"AUSLOGIOCS Defrag " FREE, fast and works.

Sorry Snuffy, but I beg to differ on this one... I tend to be a little anal about defraging and have found VOPT 9 to be the best of the breed... butt ugly front end, but oi vey does it fly... try it you'll like it :p

ps. Polly sends her regards..

To some extent, I don't trust fast defraggers, as it just feels like it's not working if it takes a short period of time.

Full Install

Using network storage at home has been the best solution for faster, cleaner full installs. By storing family photos, music, documents, Outlook data files, etc... to a drive that is accessible by all the computers in my home means that usually just the basic OS and applications are all that's needed... Well, and some configurations, of course. :D Also, using a domain with domain accounts makes for easy user and system management.

I am lazy by nature, so I always try to work smarter, not harder!! :p

I also use VOP 9. Great program.
I also use the DEFRAG in Win7 Manager
I also use Auslogic Defrag.
It depends on several things. and Yes, ea Defrager program does it differently.

Auslogic is what I use everyday. when on line anytime, it does not jam up the system. I also keep a running bootup and shutdown record.
when things get a little slow. I change defrag and use the next level.
VOP 9 has VS application mode. WOW running tests the size of the Backup is smaller when ran that way.

I test many different programs that are FREE - I also offer to my customer base, FREE to assist them... some FREE programs suk big time, some FREE programs are really GREAT>

To some extent, I don't trust fast defraggers, as it just feels like it's not working if it takes a short period of time.
depends on how often you use them, I do dailey.
