IE11 Appears not to support gadgets. What are the alternatives ?

Solution found!

It's a language problem!
Open those clock.gadget, cpu.gadget, weather.gadget files with your preferred unzipping program, e.g. 7-Zip.
Rename the "en-US"-folder to your specific language code. In my case "de-DE".
Doubleclick on the edited *.gadget files will now install the gadgets into
C:\Users\[User]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets folder. Done.
Good to hear you got it.

Jerry

That fixed the problem for me ... thanks much for this work! Awesome stuff.

I had found the work-around of 100% text magnification, but did not have the time to try and find a solution that would work at 125%. So, my hats off to you.

Zero kudo's to Microsoft for releasing this without testing - yeah, I know they are downplaying gadgets, but simple testing at the 125% default magnification should have been part of the process. This will mess a lot of people up!

Unless, it was deliberate on their part!

Anyway, thanks again!

MS is not "downplaying gadgets", they said they are a security risk and will not support them so they are not worried about them working or not. Just like 16 bit programs which they don't support either on new OS systems. Why waste time testing something they don't support.

Oh, I agree/understand. :D I was just being a bit off the wall with the conspiracy theory possibilities!

Just like 16 bit programs which they don't support either on new OS systems. Why waste time testing something they don't support.
I understand your point. :) But don't necessarily agree with it.

Given the large numbers of Windows 7 systems, and the large number of "average" users (not just us geeks and semi-geeks :)) who still use gadgets despite a Microsoft warning (which I had certainly never heard about before this!), not testing using the default settings which Windows 7 uses - specifically, the 125% default for text "size" - is a potential source of major support headaches. For unaware users, IT support departments, etc., etc., etc.

Heck, even us "techier" people have had to find time to research the problem, figure out the symptom, find the wonderful fix mentioned here, and deal with it ... tons of lost productivity.

Why create a problem for the vast majority of Windows 7 users who have probably been caught unawares by this issue? It would have been simple for Microsoft to test it and make it work with 125% mag ... like it did before!

So, I agree it is probably not deliberate, but it is <heavy sigh> very stupid on their part to not test using what the vast majority of Windows 7 users are probably used to. My opinion, of course. :)

Win7 gadgets are wildly popular with tens of millions of consumers, so MS needs to be shown how at odds they are with their own customers.

When business made the decision to migrate almost entirely off of final XP to Win7, the future of Win7 was guaranteed. Attempts to grudgingly shut off the features of their only successful OS would only be further disaster.

I pointed this out to the IE11 team member at Global MVP Summit who tried to explain that gadgets were not supported any longer. They can't turn them off and outrage a hundred million customers, but crippling them would cause even greater outrage.

If this isn't' fixed by the first of the year, I am going to inquire more of the IE11 team and will document it here.

Thanks for getting my clock back

Hi I am a new user of the forum. Glad i found you.
I downloaded the zipped gadget file and got my clock back.
Just wanted to say thanks.....funny how i didn't realize

Finally, I solved this Problem using this FIX:

Fix for Gadget display issues after IE11 Installation on Windows 7 | Ghacks

File security must be changed to owner Administrator with full access, otherwise you cannot edit gadget.xml.
After editing should be changed back to "NT SERVICE\TrustedInstaller" as owner and Administrator should have just READ-ONLY permissions.

BTW that's one of the reasons that I love more and more Linux.

I did not like that fix since it actually changes the size of the affected gadgets, I believe. They look like the sizes that would show at 100% rather than the default of 125%.

However, the fix mentioned in this thread here doesn't do that, or certainly not with a large enough change to be visible. Much better outcome, since the look and feel stays consistent with the other gadgets that were not affected by the IE11 release.

As a side comment, for me, only Microsoft gadgets appeared to be messed up when the IE11 upgrade happened ... ones from third-parties were not. I am not sure why this was the case.
