I currently have two installs of Windows XP that I use on a regular basis:

* My Pentium 4 machine which runs Windows XP Pro. It's been running like a champ all the way since ~2004 and I have no intention at all of retiring it; in fact, it's currently the oldest computer in the house that is still in active service and I personally regard it with high respect as the "high elder" of the computers on the home network. These days I use it as a secondary IRC client, for Skype, and for browsing wikis when my main machine is otherwise completely preoccupied.

* My Japanese Windows XP Pro virtual machine that I run on my main Windows 7 machine (the one listed in my system specs), I use it for playing Japanese games that hate running through AppLocale/NTLEA or just hate running on Windows 7 in general.

Both XP installs are going strong with clear reasons for being there, and I have absolutely zero intentions of retiring, replacing, or upgrading them. My P4 machine might suffer from failed capacitors on the mobo some day, but even that time has still yet to come.

I wonder what that RoboLinux will do different than e.g. running any Windows under e.g. VMware Player on any Linux host. And the fact that the Linux host is pretty immune to malware does not mean that the guest system is.

Fortunately it is very simple to backup a virtual system. In VMware Player you just copy one folder to a safe place - is easier than imaging. If something goes wrong, you retrieve that folder and reconnect it to the Player. An operation of a couple of minutes.

But all of that would not make XP any safer. It is just easier to recover. Another story would be if the XP user migrated to Linux all together. But that is another scenario.

From looking at DistroWatch's page on Robolinux, it would seem that Robolinux is just a Debian deriative with VirtualBox preinstalled and preconfigured. I would say those IT "consultants" and "gurus" mentioned are some snappy salespeople, if anything.

Right, that's what it sounded like. They found some really innocent customer. And the worst part is that this customer is not any safer now than before - he was just lucky up to now. I wonder what moron that customer's IT guy is who approved this setup. A simple daily or periodic imaging procedure would have done the same with less hassle.

For me, win 7 upgrade is good simply for performance...cant beat it.. If any need or wanna stay on Xp...fine. I wont. This idea that 7 is not affordable sounds silly. I downloaded a pro 7 32 iso, burned and installed for 61 bucks. If anyone can get around the 7 upgrade and stay on XP...or whatever...power to 'em

I think we would still have windows xp if our family desktop PC hadn't malfunctioned. One day it simply wouldn't boot up. We still have the PC, but it isn't functional. We had an old printer that we used, and that hardware would only run in XP and not in any newer OS. But we sold that printer and now we have a wireless one. And everyone has Windows 7.

Thanks, looks indeed like they have a couple of 32bit versions for low prices. I guess 32bit might be OK for people who have former XP systems. They seem to be even retail versions. That is a good XP migration path.

That is a good thing. It is about time that the PC market gets some more diversification. That will stimulate the developers of the other systems to work even harder.

I only wish that the Linux people could get together and agree on 2 or 3 mainstrem systems. The current chaos there is the biggest inhibitor for Linux growth - I think. Having many options is a nice concept (in theory). But if it takes a user 6 months to find even the right distro, then that is no good. And the resources being spread thinly over that many versions does not help either.

2 or 3 is 1 or 2 too many in my opinion, especially since some distros aren't binary-compatible with each other. Centralizing and standardizing around one distro with one desktop environment (essentially what Android did) would go a long towards popularizing desktop Linux because users would only need to learn one thing and hard/software developers would only need to develop for one thing.

Also, Linux could do well to make installing software from any source as easy as doing it on Windows. I know the merits of repositories, but at the end of it I can't help but see them as just glorified "app" (my god I hate that word) stores.

Sure (from our point of view). :)

I'm not sure that MS would think so though.

The trouble is that if there was only one Linux distro available, the risk is that they would emulate MS and Apple.

Also, if they "got it wrong", it could take out the whole desktop Linux effort.

Also, Linux could do well to make installing software from any source as easy as doing it on Windows. I know the merits of repositories, but at the end of it I can't help but see them as just glorified "app" (my god I hate that word) stores.
If there was only one Linux distro, installing could be eliminated as an issue (i.e. there'd only be one GUI and one Terminal method needed).

I hate that word too. :(
