How much will and extra 1 gig Ram improve performance?

Robert

Can y ou walk him thru finding out what he has while I go rumage around for PC 3200 and test it. I would hate to send him something that gives him problems

The principle of diminishing returns does apply here.

You will notice a substantial difference in your everyday computing experience when you upgrade from 512MB to 1.5GB.

Guys!?
I am using a Socket 939 MB and DDR memory. My experience is that after 2 GB on this system I can see no performance improvement. I have Windows 7 Forums up with FireFox, usually watching my TV card (UEFA Champions league atm), tracking my mail remotely with a Ubuntu RDC, and other apps like paint.net. I think I have my system close to maxed out and do not see any difference with 2 GB or 4 GB of DDR memory installed. With the cost of DDR, 1.5 to 2 GB would serve well, IMHO.

Ken;

The Hynix web site is not much help ... looks like
2.6V
Double Sided
184 pin Unbuffered DIMM (not ecc)
Labeled as CL3, but Hynix says will support 2, 2.5, or 3

Well the cheapest i can get 1gig of ddr400 ram is 62 dollars and thats really expensive so i can only afford 1 gig.
DDR memory can be expensive now, because it isn't in high demand or supply. I don't know if this is against the rules, but I have some high performance DDR400 memory I am looking to sell or trade. If you post your motherboard, I'll find out if anything I have will work for you.

And yes, you'll see a HUGE difference going from 512 MB to anything! I still have to support some laptops at work running XP with 1 GB of system memory, and they are painful to use.
I find this situation (OK supply and demand) infuriating.:mad2:

My finances at the moment leave me stuck with my Socket 939 technology and 1GB sticks of DDR RAM. My MB supports Dual Channel so I need two identical memory sticks to make use of this feature. I scoured the web and found some really cheap 1GB sticks to bid on ... only i have already had to return it once because 50% was DOA. Mostly what I found available was either CL3 (not preferred) or 2GB sticks ECC (not wanted). By measure of the bidding on Ebay, I would say there is a demand for this memory, I can't say about the supply except it would seem all that is left is ECC and CL3.

As noted DDR2 is half of the cost of DDR. So for the price of 4GB of DDR, I could replace my MB, processor, and still afford DDR2 memory. Go figure?

WOW - the community here is amazing! Cheers to everyone involved.

In that spirit could we also suggest ReadyBoost? An upgrade Element7 may already have in his pocket. I have just started reading about it but it sounds like drive read and write performance can be greatly increased. Can anyone elaborate or speak from experience?

Since you are in South Africa, you are probably able to get a Debit/Check Card through your local bank. They're very common and are accepted at PayPal and other sites too. That's all I use as a matter of fact.

It is a bummer that the older DDR RAM is more expensive than DDR2, but RAM is priced like a commodity item. The less there is available, the more expensive it becomes.

It would be best, as the others have stated, to install two identical sticks of RAM such as 2 - 1 GB sticks. Especially since you have Dual Channel on the mobo. Adding more RAM always improves performance, up to a certain point. It's the cheapest, most effective upgrade you can do to your system.

I hope it all works out for you!
