Sorry, I agree with whs on this; Fox News is usually highly biased and frequently inaccurate. The entire article here is less than stellar but one part really turned me off. The author claimed that XP's impending loss of support is to combat Win 8's unpopularity. What an idiot!

For those who go back far enough, a pattern begins to emerge. Win98 was a good product, ME not so much. XP was a very good OS. Vista was crap (mostly for performance reasons). Win7 is an excellent product, Win8 is a disaster. It seems like the highs get higher and the lows get lower.

I support many senior citizens, Win8 is as foreign to them as an Apple. I regularly get calls from new owners who had no idea what they were getting into. "Can you put Windows 7 on this machine?" So far, I can. At the very least, I install Classic Shell so they can use their computer. Many just return the machine. Then I get a call to upgrade the old one.

If M$ was looking for a way to drive off their established user base, they couldn't have done a better job.

I still have 2 systems with Vista and never had any real problems. I like Vista. The performance problems arose because it was sold on PCs that were not properly equipped.

I remember one lady from Portugal who came on a forum complaining about performance. They had sold her an Ultimate on a PC with 512MB of RAM and a 1.6GHz CPU. My laptops with 2GB of RAM and 2GHz CPUs run beautifully.

Most of the big media news outlets are crap if you ask me. I usually get my news from places like Slashdot and ArsTechnica where they actually care about the stuff they write or from foreign news outlets like NHK and BBC that know a thing or two about journalism.

I agree mostly.

Vista did run much better once the pc had decent specs. And manufacturers were poor about putting vista on low end pcs.

The main issue I believe though, was drivers. Drivers were a major reason why vista failed. Manufacturers were to lazy to build there code from the ground up, and were used to having admin rights all over the place. They would copy and paste there code from XP, and "alter" it a little so it would run on vista.

UAC changed that in a big way, as well as standard always being the default. By the time windows 7 came out, those lazy developers realized they could not keep ignoring what Microsoft was doing. In fact, that is the main reason why Microsoft invented UAC. Not only to make users not run as admin all the time, but to curb developers to stop expecting and writing to have there program with admin privileges when it was unnecessary for there program/app to do so.

In short, Microsoft invented UAC to piss people off. But there reasons were intended for Good. I got to hand it to Microsoft, they did a good job of forcing the Windows community and developer community to stop being so loose with security.

That is correct. Drivers were a big problem in the beginning because MS did not control them. But I think they learned their lesson. With 7 and 8 they watched out for these guys. I myself never really had any driver problems. But maybe I was lucky because I had all new gear.

I only had to spend 3 hours on the phone to get my Linksys router going. They did not even have a Vista version and the girl on the phone created one on the fly. But she was good at it.
