It was not a driver problem but after 7 years I really don't remember the details. It just did not work with Vista.

I still have 2 systems with Vista and never had any real problems. I like Vista. The performance problems arose because it was sold on PCs that were not properly equipped.

I remember one lady from Portugal who came on a forum complaining about performance. They had sold her an Ultimate on a PC with 512MB of RAM and a 1.6GHz CPU. My laptops with 2GB of RAM and 2GHz CPUs run beautifully.

It is quite true that Vista was sold on underpowered machines, but those machines met the minimum system requirements as spec'd by M$. 2gb of RAM is the minimum for Vista to run decently, and yes, you are correct, with enough resources it can run well.
As I write this, I am running an old Toshiba P25 laptop with a 3.4 ghz P4 and 768 mb RAM with Win7 Ultimate. I installed 7 on this machine (imaged with Norton Ghost) just to see if it would run. It actually runs quite well, very snappy performance. After the beating M$ took on Vista, they went back and tightened up their code (for 7) instead of assuming that everybody would have plenty of RAM. Not unlike the myopia of our elected officials inside the Beltway, assuming that everybody makes more that $100k, has gold-plated medical insurance and a luxurious retirement plan.

Is Windows 8.1 as vulnerable as I have experienced ?

I think malware took over my PC and changed my boot order. When I was on YouTube my computer just froze, monitor when black and turned off, a loud sound came out of the speakers. When I restarted my computer I got an error that there was not Windows boot drive.

I suspect it has something to do with your own doing or something burned out inside. You may start a thread in Performance & Maintenance - Windows 7 Help Forums or General discussion.

It seems Microsoft can't do anything right when it comes to interfacing with people on a simple level - Ford was using Microsoft Sync software / firmware for its cars and now they are switching to Blackberry! Remember the head of Ford was being considered to take over as head of Microsoft!

Clearly they have to innovate in performance, programs, colors, etc. But placing the classic desktop as a second option was not a good idea.
In addition, no all have touch screen monitors. So a percentage of people will not see the need to buy that interface.
That menu of windows 8 looks interesting, but(those functions) could have been added in W7 taskbar.

They should've hired the head of Ford. Ford is geared more towards pleasing their constituents.
Microsoft has come to believe they can just TELL their constituents what to like and what to dislike.
To me, Microsoft's new attitude is a good way to create a backlash.
