Solved 2010 pro uninstal from old & install on new laptop

Hi all..

I'd like to take off Office 2010 Pro from my old laptop and put it on my new laptop (Win8.1).

Is it just a case of uninstalling, installing and activating with my product key, or will there be 'issues'?

(I can only get online with 1 laptop at a time via USB tethering to my mobile phone - so will they assume I'm trying to use my 1 key for 2 instalations)

Or is there a way to deactivate through Office? (I've looked but couldn't find any thing...)

Allend I am no expert ate but as far as I am aware Office as the retail box can be installed on up to three computers at once.
If this is so for what you have I cannot say if you try and it is not allowable they will soon let you know and a quick phone call to Microsoft would I am sure they would give you some leeway.

As far as I am aware the Office license is applicable to only one installation at a time, unless you have a multi user license, such as a family pack or something similar.
However, the OP should not have any problems & if reactivation is required a phone call to MS should be able to sort out the problem.

Hum Ranger mate I found this article which really sheds only a little light on the matter and is so convoluted (Microsoft licencing stuff) but it does say that the retail 2010 Office (which I use and have installed on two machines) can be used as such.

Now the fun and games seem to arise when it comes to versions after 2010 as I also had no problems when I installed 2007 on my machines too. In fact the 2007 I have installed three times to my knowledge on my laptop by way of installing new hard drives and system crashes for example.

In any case I think that Microsoft in their infinite wisdom have chosen the path to out and out greed as I think there must be more than a few of us with more machines than one. This leaves us as the consumer in a very unenviable position of having to purchase another retail version for extra machines.
I can sort of understand the position on OEM's but retail I think I (and very many others) have spent a substantial amount of hard earned dollars purchasing the Office program beit the retail or OEM over the years and I reckon some leeway should be forthcoming from Microsoft with retail versions of this program.
I just find greed a very distasteful matter and especially when ones loyalties have been to stay with Microsoft products again over the years despite there being many other options available now. I speak for home products I have not had much to do with the professional side of their produts.

Thanks ICit2lol for that, so it seems we both may be correct, you in the case of Office 2010 & me in the case of Office 2013. The website link you posted certain does show how confusing the situation is even to MS, so how is the poor consumer supposed to know what they can & can't do.
I bought my Office 2013 Pro, Retail Version, in the middle of last year & paid au$539 for it, so it is not cheap. If & when the time comes & I have to rebuild my PC, I will be very angry if I cant reinstall my Office program, without having to buy a new one.
It does seem in this dog eat dog world of today that the consumer is taken to the cleaners all the time by corporate greed.

Thanks for the replies, gentlemen.

Without uninstalling from the Win7HP laptop, I installed it ok on the Win8.1 laptop using the same key, though it was offline at the time. It finished ok, activated, though without updates as I have not been online with it yet. I'll probably uninstall it from the Win7 box as, since my battery only lasts half an hour on a full charge, I'll dedicate it to a media server/NAS, though it will be interesting to see what happens when I get them both online at the same time.

Yep, so absolutely no problems then. Just got the new laptop online (and it's now updating 640Mb of patches and updates).
Upon launching Word, it asked me if I wanted to activate the product over the internet (recommended) or over the phone.
I clicked activate over web and it said 'successful' after a slight pause.
Well, that was a lot less painless than I thought it was going to be....
