Windows 7 is over-writing files that have a different file name

I have a problem when saving files in Windows 7. say I have a png with the name "alduin & khajiit 1.png" and I highlight it to grab the file name but I change the "1" to a "2" for a file name "alduin & Khajiit 2.png" in the file name field, Windows 7 still asks if I want to overwrite it despite the different file name. if I say yes it overwrites the file despite the different file name but still has "alduin & Khajiit 2.png" as a file name and "alduin & khajiit 1.png" is gone (overwritten). how do I fix this?

Explorer has many quirks that will never be fixed. I would take a look at FreeCommander 2009.02b. The renamer is most excellent.

I don't remember seeing what you mention. I don't have W7 right now to try it. I'm on a W8 Laptop until I can start buying desktops again. Every time I get a PC with a new Windows OS the 2 things that drive me nuts are getting the AV stuff I don't want off, and finding out where they hid the settings this time. It's annoying. But it seems to be a requirement.

Have you tried running sfc?

Open the Command Prompt (Use the "Run as administrator" option in the context menu).
Type:
sfc /scannow

It sounds like a procedural thing or the software you're using. I do the exact same thing all the time with pictures and don't have a problem. I use "Save As" and select a picture name that I want to serialize for a new image. I use this procedure with Paint and IrfanView most frequently. If you use Save and select a named image Windows may interpret that as the same as changing the name of the existing file.

I have the exact same problem BUT ONLY WITH A SPECIFIC SOFTWARE. I don't think this is a Windows problem, but rather a quirk in the software you are using. In another graphic image generating software I use the same re-naming technique you describe and have no problems. I only run into trouble when using an old version of Paint Shop Pro 9.01. The software doesn't like Windows Aero much either ...

What software? I just tried Save and Save As with a couple I have and all created a new file with the new name.

Can you post step by step images of what you're doing?

Also, what AV are you using?

I am not sure if I understand you correctly but if you are talking about renaming a file by clicking it twice and replacing the highlighted name with a new one, it is not an issue. This is how Windows is designed to work.

"Highlighting" the file name as you say by clicking it twice (not same as double click) offers the same function as context menu (right click menu) function Rename. Any changes made to filename will be considered as renaming, not as creating a copy of the file.

This is how renaming and copying the file are done without using the context menu:

• Rename a file
  • Click file twice, replace the highlighted filename with a new name
• Create a copy of a file in same folder
  • Drag file a few millimeters / fractions of an inch with the right mouse button, release the mouse, select Copy Here

It works exactly the same way in Windows XP as shown in the video below. My apologies for the "Ghost Cursor", a second cursor showing left or below the real one; it's because my screen recording software does not like recording a window in a virtual machine:

I am at a loss. I know using PSP the software seems to get confused, and I HAVE TO TYPE the sequential file name in full to prevent an over-wright. When I save in other software I can select a file, backspace the sequential number and advance it by one.

I do hope someone can get you straightened out.

Does it make any difference if there are spaces in the filename? I try to avoid them so I don't know what happens with Explorer rename. But it seems like you have some funky filename characters such as ampersands and spaces.
