I am sticking with Vista - convince me otherwise

I have been using Windows Vista x64 for nearly a year and really can't see any real benefit to upgrade to Windows 7, just yet.

While initially enthusiastic, my home PC, does what it needs to do.

I use it for 2 things mainly.

1) Internet Browsing
2) Civilization 4 modding (see KiwiTT's Road to War Mini-Mod - Civilization Fanatics' Forums

I worry that if I upgrade, my Civ 4 modding will break, and can no longer play or mod Civilization 4. This to be honest is my biggest fear !!!

If you are happy with your OS, and it does everything you need, then don't upgrade.

Why should we have to convince you? If you chose to stick with something then stay. Just know Windows 7 is very similar to Windows Vista. I would suggest just trying it out, either in a virtual machine, or dual boot for a while.

Vista is still very good, I love it as an OS, so if your happy with it, stick with it, and you might join the 7 team in a year or two.

I use a Magnum.
Perfect application for dual boot. You don't have sufficient RAM for a VM to do the comparison justice.

So, no one is likely to try and convince you. At least not for the reason offered.

Yow KiwiTT

You may stick to it. But most techs are worth to try. Show you a simple thing, when I did work with vista ultimate x64, the first thing I noticed was that it consumed 26 Gb of my system drive. With Win7 it just takes up 14 to 16 Gb.
Just in case if one day you decide to work with Win7, try to do files and setting transfer. Who knows your Civ 4 would have better dance on it.? :-)

Cheers..
Kevin.

That's what I am thinking.

Let it get in to the marketplace for a while. At the moment Civ 4 is more critical for me ... and as had been said it is Win 7 just an OS, albeit the best Win OS for a long time.

+ estimated NZ$300-$400 is a lot of money for little gain.

I was looking at your specs, and your running an RC. Doesn't Civ run on that? It runs great on mine. Me and my roommate - Lemon Merchant from CFC - are going nuts waiting for the RTM to finally get here. I've had no issues and she's all amped up to try it out. Has anybody tried it out on an RTM copy yet? I haven't seen anybody at CFC post about it so I'm kinda curious, but with no probs on the RC's I cant see the RTM being any different. Getting it to run is no weirder than vista 64 as far as I can tell. I'd say give it a try and dual boot for a while.

KiWiTT, a ton of us on here are using the RTM, myself included.
It runs great.

As for Civ4, I cannot imagine it would not work.
I agree with Antman and the others, dual boot it and try it out. If you like it and Civ4 works, then upgrade if you want.

If not, keep using Vista.
Its up to you.

I suppose Vista is alright, its very similar to that of Windows 7, but then again, Windows 7 uses less of your system resources to run, its faster than Vista, even faster than XP was when loading, the system is more responsive, its intelligent.That's why I've chosen it over Windows XP (my trusted favourite) and Vista.

Had Windows Vista 64 Home Premium and upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate 64.

* Downloaded drivers to USB Key
* Copied all remaining data to 1 TB external disk as a precaution. (use the 1 TB disk as primary storage)
* Set BIOS to boot from DVD first
* Booted Win 7 DVD
* Installed Windows 7 by formating drive first (advanced option)
* Adjusted standard features
* Reset BIOS to boot from HDD first
* Installed Windows XP Mode (and Virtual PC), may or may not use it.
* Turned off System Restore in XP Mode and Win 7
* Installed Live Extras
* Installed MSE
* Installed additional Themes
* Ran Windows/Microsoft Update
* Installed Graphics Driver (others not needed)
* Tested Experience Rating
* Installed JRE, Acrobat, OpenOffice
* Configured Windows Mail - sent email
* Installed CIV 4
* Installed CIV 4 Patches
* Ran CIV 4 Mods
* Installed my Mod
* Ran my Mod
* Editted my Mod

In fact - too easy. All told 4 hours and up and running fully (including downloads) :D
