all downloads stop after a few seconds

Since a few weeks all my downloads on a Dell Inspiron 620 stop after a few seconds. I have 5 PC's at home and only this one is having the problem. I tried both wifi and fixed line to the router, I removed Advanced System Care, disabled Norton Antivirus and Firewall, etc etc. I tried it from IE as well as Chrome, same problem. I also have it in programs e.g. Java related downloads, or Spybot updates. Any tips? Didn't have it in the past so must be software related. As I tried it on the Dell wifi card as well as the build-in realtek ethernet card I guess it's not a driver issue.

The good news is your computer can be fixed.
The bad news; once you have use Advanced System Care it just might take a Clean Install.
Some will think this method is extreme so hang around for more ideas.

I'm using Advanced System Care also on my other PC's without issues, so it sounds unlikely that this is the cause

Thxs, I performed the cleanstart and discovered residual McAfee services, deleted them using a McAfee uninstaller, but the problem still persists. After a cleanstart I cannot test the download function as there is no network, is there a cleanstart function that still enables a browser and network?

Ultimately you might need to re-install Mcafee/ activate it referring to Mcafee support and use the uninstaller to get rid of it,
But refer to Mcafee's settings to make sure no removal protections are enabled before attempting to get rid of it again,

The full uninstall of McAfee was succesful using the McAfee unistaller, so that's off the PC, only Norton is there now.
When I boot in safe mode I do have network, but can't open browsers due to proxy issues. Does somebody now a test download (of at least 10Mb) that I could try in safe mode? Or is there a way to make browsers work in Safe mode?

I ran the Adwcleaner, it did some cleaning but to no result, downloads still stop after about 5 seconds. Furthermore the network connection is excellent and online games etc work perfectly well, just downloads taking more then a few seconds will abort. Any further tips?

I've tried the same download both from Chrome and IE, both didn't work. Also an exe on my PC trying to download Java for Chrome aborts. Also the update from Spybot aborts (only for the large file). So doens't matter where I initiate a download, they all fail after a couple of seconds. So I don't think cleaning up IE will be of any help. Shorter downloads work fine (like Norton liveupdate who fetches the downloads very fast).

The only thing I can come up with is test using a new administrator account ?

This just verifies that a fresh install is best and immediately make a system image even before you download a security suite,

Tried it with a new admin account, same errors. I'm really at the end of my options now, but re-installing Windows7 is such a hassle, not looking forward to it.

Please don't take this wrong but you started this thread a week ago, telling that this had been going on for weeks. Compared to that, a fresh install would have been a lot faster and simpler solution.

You best bet is a fresh install with home premium at 69.99 at TigerDirect your just wasting time now,

Since a Clean Install is the suggested fix (and yes, ASC is a culprit in the original problem, even if you use it on other PCs with no problems...yet), try this Fixit. Are the other working PCs also Vista or newer?

It takes much longer than expected to download an e-mail message from a POP3 server in Outlook 2007 or in Outlook 2010

I would also suspect Norton, does it have a link scanner? If so, can the scanner be disabled? You also mention not being able to connect in Safe Mode with Networking due to proxy issues? It's possible these proxies are the cause, can you connect without proxy as a test?

The PC with the problem is working on Windows 7, the other are working on Windows XP, Windows 7 and Windows 8. The problem is not related to mail, it is related to downloading games, Java updates etc, each download taking longer then a couple of seconds aborts. Regards, Mark

I know it isn't a mail issue, but the settings are the same. Perhaps not the fix, but it would still be worth trying. A Guy
