Working w/ IT support contractor-Win 7 s/w & w/c is not...?

Hello all.

I am new here. I am an Australian male, stuck in East Asia, & swamped by the demands of hardware, software, paper & digital file overhaul. The aim has been simple enough--good, solid personal management. But the execution, well...

As they say, "if only I'd known before I began this project....". This work has been going on for an extraordinary long time & thankfully, I am 'nearing the end'.

As part of the process, the retirement of the XP OS has forced me to modernise/upgrade. As such. I have had to engage the services of an independent IT support contractor to undertake both a reinstallation of Win 7 in my main desktop, & installation in my new up-to-date laptop, which is to replace my present backup desktop (what i am using now).

I am negotiating with him the content of his work with Win 7. He mainly deals with enterprise-level material unlike the personal level IT. The problem is that neither he nor I know exactly what software Win 7 has.

I have managed to put together a list of the software, & wondering if any people here might be able to inform me which from the list comes with Win 7. It would be nice if you you could let me know what it does, if possible? My plan is to go back to him, & say that I know which material needs to be backed up, & which can be 'let go'.

Quite frankly, I'm not sure about some of the programs you are asking about. But, there is a slight learning curve, but Windows 7 is a much better OS than XP. Some of the features you are asking about are incorporated in Windows 7, just in a different location, some may require a different version and some appear to be drivers from the motherboard manufacturer, which you will have to check. For the most part the first thing you will recognize is Windows 7 will install the majority of the drivers you need itself. CCC will run fine, it will just require a different version than XP does and is easily obtainable from AMD. Any program that will not run on Widows 7 can be run in XP mode if you get Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate.

I don't believe you need to hire anyone to install Windows 7. It is pretty simple to do, but does require a clean install. Just be certain to back up all personal files before beginning.

I never quite know how to write in IT forums--either too much detail, or not enough. I needed to give some background to a newbie like myself, but IT is not my strong point.

The list comes from my main machine (Win 7) which is the concern. The XP machine has no relation with the list-it is merely incidental background. Perhaps this was an unnecessary detail.

i) "Some of the features you are asking about are incorporated in Windows 7"--great. I was hoping that someone might oblige me & let me know which.

ii) "some may require a different version"-not quite clear of your meaning here

iii) "some appear to be drivers from the motherboard manufacturer, which you will have to check"-thanks. Not quite sure which ones.

I am a little confused. I do not understand why I would consider doing this in a machine that already has Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit in it?

If your question of what you should retain from the XP system, the answer is your user files. None of the system files will serve a purpose in Windows 7.

You mention 2 computers: "main desktop" and "new up-to-date laptop".

Clarification needed on 3 issues:

Which of those 2 computers are you trying to install Windows 7 on?

What operating system is now on the "main desktop"?

What operating system is now on the "new up-to-date laptop"

I don't yet understand exactly what you have and what you want to do.

As WHS says, if all you want to do is upgrade the laptop from XP to Windows 7, then you should backup whatever is in the users directory on the current XP machine. You will have to reinstall whatever programs you have.

Similarly, if the desktop already has Windows 7 and you intend to reinstall Windows 7 on it (for some reason), you'd need to backup your personal data--which is typically under the C:\users directory somewhere--but for all we know you may have squirreled your data away somewhere else.

But your intent is not clear at this point.

Sorry, I misunderstood and thought you still had XP on some PC(s)...
No need to run it on a Win 7 OS.

There is a learning curve to any new OS.
If you have problems, ask in SF and many folks here will help you.
If you can't find out how to do something in 7 that you did in XP, someone here should be able to help.

I really don't know what are asking, or what "RETAIN BA?" means...

I can say I liked XP Search better than Win 7 Search, so I found and usually use a 3rd Party search utility.
