Hello.I'm new here so first i want'it to say HI.
Second: i have a problem with sharing my internet connection.
I have windows 7 and i want it to give internet to the other computer with WinXP.
Information:
-we are connected using the SWITCH, because i have another friend with XP , but he is not available right now
- i have 2 eth cards : first have ip from my ISP using DHCP and its like 10.xx... etc and on this card i have ENABLED SHARING, if i will not do that my other card will have ip like this 169...(if i remember right :))
- on the second i have ip 192.168.137.1 that has been auto generated by windows(because ive check ICS on the first card , that with internet)
- computer with XP has IP given by the comp with Win7, for example 192.168.137.123
Everything could be OK , but it isn't. After a while , like 20-30 mins or something, its really random i think, computer with WinXP doesn't have internet anymore. ON my Win7, i need to go to my Net Adapters and UNCHECK ICS , then i click OK , and i CHECK ICS again , and i click ok , and the computer with XP have his internet connection again, but again "for a while". Im really upset , i dont know whats the problem. Setting ICS is almost the same as on WinXP, and it work fine for me for a couple of years, so it should work. Besides when WinXP doesn't have internet, i still could ping internet websites, but only using their IPs like 74.125.45.100(google.com), so i was thinking maybe its something with DNS, but i cant go to google.com even if i put IP directly into the browser, but normally i should open this page by using IP address. But thats not the POINT. Internet is shared for like 20 mins , and then sharing is gone.

Why on earth would you want to use ICS, when you are both connected to a switch???

ICS is only for cases where one computer is directly connected to the modem, without router and without switch.

So, what is it that you want to do?
Have internet on both machines?

This time make your question shorter and less prone to misinterpretation.

Thanks.

I have internet on my Win7 from my ISP, and i want it to share with two friends, they both have WinXP, im trying only with one of them because the other is not available right now. And as i wrote, im using ICS to give him internet , but its only working for some time, i dont know like 20-30 min. And NO, i dont have to be connected through modem to be able to use ICS. I have a CABLE connection from my ISP. U know, a big intranet LAN network. And the switch is After my computer with WIN7. Its like this:
ISP-> My comp with WIN7 and ICS enabled-> switch-> 2 computers with WinXP. Thats it.

But you have a switch, right?

Why not connect switch to modem, and all three computers to the switch?

That way you would all have internet without having to do anything.

We are talking about a network switch right?

No man. It's not like that. In my case Your solution is working WITH Router instead of switch. My ISP gives me IP and allow to access the internet based on my MAC address, so i cant connect switch directly to the cable because i cant give switch MY MAC address, i could do it with router but i dont have any right now. And i do not have MODEM. I have CABLE connection.
I will wrote this again, with details:
ISP->ehter CARD with MAC that ISP recognize-> from second card to SWITCH -> and those 2 guys are conncted to the SWITCH. Listen, it has worked for me when i had XP, and it was for a long time. Now, two days ago ive installed WIN7, and im trying to do the same on this system, and its working, but the connection breaks afer this random ammount of minutes. I still have internet on my WIN7, but my frind, who has internet from me, from Win7 system, dont. After this random time, its like ICS is not working. I need to go to SHARING TAB and UNCHECK->OK then CHECK->OK again, and its working again, but again for some time.

Ok, now it's clear to me. thanks.

I know of XP SP3 having trouble with ICS. Random drops.
Maybe this article has something to do with it, not sure.
Windows XP Service Pack 3-based computers in a private network that uses Internet Connection Sharing may lose network connectivity after you change the network adapter settings of the private adapter on the Internet Connection Sharing computer

I also read that installing IPv6 on the XP machines might help.

Good luck.

Yeah, but people are saying that its better to shut down IPv6, because it's not used and it could disturb IPv4 protocol, i dont know if its true or not,but and ive unchecked IPv6 on my both eth cards because it's not used anyway :) Thank U for the link U gave me, i will check if i can do something with my problem. Thanks man. Cheers
