Two Win7 PCs in need of networking

I've had a Win 7 PC (#1) in my den for several years, and recently bought another Win 7 PC for another room (#2). I thought with homegroups it was going to be easy to network them. Not so it seems. On #2, I went to Control Panel->Homegroups and checked printer and documents, plus pwd. I found I had somehow Joined. I then went to Control Panel->Homegroups on #1, and was greeted by the attached page. Oddly, I can be on #2, and reach files on #1. BTW, why are there two icons with Network 2 on them. The icons look like park benches.

I'm stumped. Comments?

Make sure you create the homegroup correctly

Delete any homegroups on each pc. or Laptop.

Well, using "Start to finish" above, I figured out how to join on #1. I needed to give it my pwd, which I had from #2. In both machines it failed. Stuck again.

Where it says "Network 2" and underneath it says "Public Network" Click Public Network

Then change it to "Home Network" then click next, then write down the password.

In your first post you posted the picture and your network is listed as "Public Network".

It doesn't mean its open to the Public, fwiw.

Im not telling you to change it TO Public Network, to create a homegroup you need it set to "Home Network"

Well, it looks like it's time to spend some bucks at the computer store to get this done.

For home you dont want a public network. You first have to make it a public network; then change it to a home network by following the instructions above.

You should not have to spend money to be able to network the 2 as long as their are proper connections for both.

Solarblast you should choose Home Network only that is trusted. Public is untrusted. Forget Public and Work.


Re-miss of me you should remove the homegroup first see below:

HomeGroup: frequently asked questions

Choose Home Network by clicking on blue Public Network text and choosing Home.


Then create Homegroup on one computer and join the other computer by entering the password given by the first computer.

This isn't exactly rocket science dude. The computer store won't help with this.

This has to be about the easiest thing you can do on a Windows machine.

Follow directions and it will work.

OK, I changed "Home Network" to Public. A dialog appeared shown in the attachment. What am I supposed to do there? Use what's below "Change your network settings"? If I press Public network, it gives me the three choices again, Home, Work, Public.

Select Home then write down the password.
