New Core i7 860 hitting 5Ghz

For all of you wondering about the new CPUs from Intel, looks like they're fro real. Here is an example of the 860 hitting 5Ghz! Looks like it's some real competition for the 920!

I have the same setup as this guy, although my cooling and RAM probably isn't as good. This is amazing!

Here is a well known benchmark site. Not much is beating the 860. (only 965 and 975)

FYI - just took the i7 860 to 4.0Ghz with a slight bump in core voltage and RAM and the rest on "normal"

This may turn out to be a 920 killer. If you want to spend more $$ you can get better with the 965 or 975 but for 1/3 the price and almost the same performance....you guys thinking about upgrading the 1366 should start doing some reading.

This 1156 socket will do anything from $200(i5 750) budget gaming to extreme performance. (i7 860 or i7 870)

Until something else comes out, the i7 860 is the one to beat for price to performance.

4Ghz with almost no effort (stable with prime 95 for 2 hours)

Not necessarily true.. You're missing one *huge* play.

The future 6 core (12 total) CPUs will all be LGA1366 - leaving those who purchased LGA1156 mobos out in the cold.

Granted, these new CPUs are packing a punch - but there is a major gap heading our way if Intel decides to abandon the LGA1156 anytime soon.

Personally, I am sticking with LGA1366 CPUs (especially since I already bought a 965 EE for $600 USD). 1/3 what?

Since most games aren't even using a quad core yet I don't see any reason to hold out for the 6-core CPU coming up...

The 865 is a beast...there is no doubt about that and for the price it is very hard to recommend a 920 except for the future-proof argument

Sure, it's a beast now - as was the Pentium top of the line made for the Socket 478. however, along came dual Cores using only LGA 775.

Promise of power now versus promise of power for the next 5 years is hard to recommend going for the short term, only to have to build a new machine in 2 years.

One other thing to think about is that Hardware is always years above the software...

Most of the time people would be completely fine just upgrading their video card and/or RAM to keep up with modern apps. A MOBO two among the way would do also

Until games start going full quad-core than you have performance that would mostly go unused...unless you are in select "groups" such as a video editor...

People who are going for anything such as the X58 chipset are the same folks that would have to do an upgrade after 2 years...I have never known of any person who is a pro gamer or enthusiast to sit on the same rig for up to 5 years...

The X58 chipset is for the enthusiasts right now and it will be awhile before any mainstream app or game takes advantage of the 6-core CPU

I guess I have a mindset of getting what you need now and gradually get more later vs. getting enough to last you awhile and then repeat for something newer later

I tend to fall into the latter category - I don't build to replace 2 years later - I build to last.

In 2002 I built a P4 system with a whopping 1 GB of RAM - people thought I was crazy.

That same mobo and GPU and RAM are still sitting in my closet, having been replaced in March of 2007 by a P3 3.2 GHz machine with 3 GB of RAM....

I built this machine in Spring 2008 and it is already hampering me as I built on a budget - but since I have the 965, I am pretty much stuck with an x58 system, so I am planning on building big again and then resting on my laurels for 4-5 years.

Another consideration: Both USB and Sata are about to shift to version 3. Based on what I've read and the two toys with which I've played (ND agreement, so don't ask), neither is quite ready for prime time.

Seagate has just announced a 2TB Sata 3 "extreme" hard drive with 64MB cache (one-upping WD's brand new 2TB "black" announced a few days ago). Several SSD's -- which, while extremely fast, are not really ready for mainstream prime time, either -- will be coming out in Sata 3 versions 2Q 2010.

I figure that in a year to a year-and-a-half, it will be time for a whole new box, anyway.

I'm happy with what I have (LGA1366 & i7-920) for now, but I'll probably forego 6 cores until I build completely anew. If I were buying for right now, I'd get the LGA1156 (Gigabyte's GA-P55-UD4P board) and the i7-860, regardless of the 4-core limitation. Less money now and more later when everything gets shifted up a notch.

I have had USB and SATA 3 in the back of my mind for awhile so they haven't been a factor in my hardware decisions though that might change

I plan on building a system in January 2010 so who knows how things will look then. As of right now I can't justify an X58 setup but if prices fall by my build target than more than likely I will skip the P55

I suppose I am playing a devil's advocate, as that is pretty much what I opted to do in Spring '08 - I got myself a basic system put together, augmented it with a pair of GTX 260s and then a pair of Acer 22" ws monitors, and I am content with that - but my next system should be much more high end, if I plan and watch and craftily and shrewdly make purchases.

This is Kinda what I'm worried about. The Mobo I got was "supposed" to have SATA6. It was being previewed with it. USB3 and SATA6 are reasons I will get a new mobo when it comes out.

I hope the 1156 socket is here to stay for a while. My guess is with the new i5s coming out it will be. I am EXTREMELY happy with the performance I got for $550. (CPU, RAM, MOBO)You just can't beat it.

The 860 and 870 are fine options for any enthusiast. We don't keep our systems long enough to worry about it.

Both Gigabyte and Asus have "sampled" mobos with gen.3 Sata and USB; however, both have backed off. Asus is now offering a Sata.3 add-on card (although I suspect the quantity shipped thus far is in single digits).

I'm not worried about it. I really don't want to be on the extreme leading edge of generational technology. I'm perfectly happy to settle in when the BIOS and drivers have had a chance to go through a couple or three publically issued updates (as opposed to the frantic updates done for the various review sites).

Come winter 2010-11, I'll build a new primary machine and retire the replaced parts of the current one to my "re-new"secondary system. I've been doing the two-year parts shuffle for about two decades, now; and it has served me well.

These are some good points.

BTW - I have hit over 4Ghz with mine with very little effort and it didn't even run that hot. (next time I will get window snips)
