Dell battery 'plugged in, not charging' - Win7 or hardware?

I have the "plugged in, not charging" issue with my Dell Inspiron 1100 laptop. This has been going on for the past week and although I'm able to 'resolve' it by following the steps below, it will return after 2 or 3 power ups.

>Disconnect AC
>Shutdown
>Remove battery
>Connect AC
>Startup
>In Device Manager, Under the Batteries category, right-click all of the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery listings, and select Uninstall (it’s ok if you only have 1).
>Shutdown
>Disconnect AC
>Insert battery
>Connect AC
>Startup

When I'm experiencing this problem a warning message will pop up on power up identifying an issue with the AC adapter.

I'm trying to find out whether this is a Windows 7 problem (as I think I read somewhere), given that the steps above does temporarily fix it, or whether in fact there is a genuine issue with my AC adapter, which needs to be replaced.

Or, rather, does following the steps above merely trick the laptop into accepting a dodgy adapter that needs replacing?

I'm using the original adapter that came with the laptop, incidentally. Would replacing it with a generic likely resolve this daily occurrence?

I would seriously doubt W7 on this and first look to physical battery and adapter connections and wires or the adapter itself ! Also if this is after a clean or fresh install of W7 did you install all and the latest updated drivers off the mfg'r. site?

It's not a fresh install so the drivers should be fine. Thanks for the suggestion though.

I think it's more likely that it's an adapter problem. If so, can anyone offer any theories as to why following those steps will temporarily fix the problem?

Trace down the connections while it's charging and watch for any odd on/off activities, work the wire in your hands and watch the charging icon on screen.

I had the same on my Vostro 1520. It was the adapter
Boot up with the charger plugged in. Enter SETUP mode, I think it's F2

On the bottom of the display, see it if stated that there is an adapter connected to it, should states the wattage of the adapter

My original Dell adapter was not recognized, purchased a off brand on ebay for 12 dollars, delivered.

It's 8/13/2016 and after running a Microsoft System Check today on my Dell Latitude I got the battery is connected but not charging notice. I did all the various turn off, remove battery, and turn on again suggested fixes on this and other threads- none worked.

I went into the BIOS (R12 key at start up on my dell) and clicked on BIOS setup, then on battery. It said battery was at 93% which was the same as on my battery meter symbol. The charger was 90W.

At the bottom of the battery pop up screen was a box to click to reset BIOS defaults. I tried everything else and failed. It warns you all settings will go back to default. I clicked on it and the laptop continued to boot up. When it did I saw the battery charging indicator light lite up. The battery meter symbol now says charging.

Seem the system check cleaning screwed something up. So before you buy a new battery or charger try resetting the BIOS default in the battery section of the BIOS.

Worked for me. Good luck
