Forgot HDD password

Hi,

I have a Vostro 1510 and I forgot the HDD password. Removing the CMOS for a while will not fix the issue because the password is with the firmware? I tried the HDD in another laptop and it tells me that the HDD is password protected.

I want to know if there is anyway I can remove the password and be able to boot into Windows. I don't want to have to reformat my drive.

Format is your only option unfortunately.

You would not even be able to format it. The HDD will not allow you to access it until the password is provided.

Not true. Kill disk can wipe any drive regardless of its password or setting.

You can try ATAPWD tool to reset the password.

ATAPWD is included with Hiren's Boot CD.

All I can suggest is to contact the computer manufacturer and be prepared to prove ownership.
An HD password is a security measure in the event the laptop is stolen. Many people have sensitive data on a laptop that must not fall into the wrong hands. Unlike a desktop, laptop BIOS and HD passwords are not stored in the CMOS. If they were easily removed they would serve no useful purpose.

If set such passwords should be written down and kept in a secure location. Or never forget them.
