Hi, I have this laptop/specs

Review Samsung NP355V5C-S05DE Notebook - NotebookCheck.net Reviews

So there's 2 DDR3 slots in the machine, both occupied by 2GB and 4GB

I've seen on the internet you get 8GB ram pieces.

The website says that I can switch the 2gb for a 4gb to have a maximum of 8gb ram on the machine.

But if there's 8GB ram pieces on amazon/internet wherever, can I not replace them both with 2x8GB rams, contradicting the above line and giving a maximum of 16GB ram instead?

I'm new to the whole RAM thing and its my first time installing/changing RAM so before I go off to buy RAM I wanted to know whats up.

Thanks

No

All memory slots have a maximum size RAM module that they can accommodate, which in this case is 4 GB. The existence of 8 GB RAM modules changes nothing.

No.

The site you linked said:
The RAM can be expanded up to a maximum of 8 GB

I looked at Crucial.com memory configurator tool, which is almost always accurate.

But, I did NOT see that EXACT model. I did see numerous models that began with "NP355V5C".

Those other models seem to accept 16 GB, so I would suspect that would apply to yours also.

However, I would yield to what is stated at Samsung web site.

Can you post the link to the specfications at Samsung. It may be worded in a way that implies an 8 GB limit when it will actually accept 16 GB.

Having said that---not many people have any legitimate use for 16. Why do you think you need that much? How much are you using right now? How much have you been using typically?

That link you just posted takes me to:

SAMSUNG

For the A05UK version.

Your first post in this thread refers to a link for the S05DE version.

Which is correct?

The link you posted shows a user manual, but it's in a moronic exe format rather than PDF. I downloaded it anyway and ran it. It showed nothing whatsoever, so I have no idea what the user manual supposedly says.

The Crucial Configurator says this for the A05UK:

Maximum memory: 16384MB
Slots: 2 (2 banks of 1)
*Not to exceed manufacturer supported memory.

I have no idea what the "manufacturer supported memory" is because I can't open the moronic user manual.

The second one (A05UK) is mine, I thought it'd be the same since the picture of the laptop looks the same as mine and it has the same graphics card etc

My 2 cents worth if you are going to put in new RAM then a matched pair of 4GB sticks is best and if you like G Skill for example try here.
Welcome to the G.SKILL TECH FORUM Tradesman is really on the ball - that is njo reflection on memeber sin here of course .
