2012 - End of an Era. Or the World's?

First off, let's clarify here that I know there have been referrals to the world's end in the past, however all of them proved to be unreal.

• The year 1000 was thought to be the end of the world in the past.
• The year 2000 was thought to be the end of the world as well, but here we are all, live and kicking.

Now, I've been hearing around about 2012, the Maya's Calendar and other related stuff all pointing to the year 2012 and "the end of the world as we know it".

After doing some research I found the following as facts:

1. Maya's Haab Calendar is the most precise annual calendar ever created. It's even more precise than ours , cause we have a year divided by 365.25, or else, 365 1/4 days, whereas the Mayas calculated a more precise division : 365.2422.

2. The Mayas are known for their extraordinary astonomical knowledge, at least for their time.

3. The Maya's Calendar places the end of the current Era at December 21, 11:11am GMT on the year 2012.

4. In 1983, NASA's astronomers discovered a very large object (around the size of Jupiter) near our Solar System.

5. In January 2005 , Eris, a new planet was discovered having a very large orbit around our Sun, therefore being a planet of our Solar System

6. The Sumerians, well-known ancient people, have in their mythology or history, whatever, the periodical arrival of a planet or deity (aprx. every 3000 years ) which they called Nibiru (Planet of Transportation). Some of their carved stones, depict all of our currently known planets plus one more(it was believed back then to have known only 5 , the naked-eye visible ones). A similar planet or deity is also known to the jews as Marduk.

7. Many books have been written about this , each referring to different reasons that would bring the end of the world.

8. Nasa installed a new telescope on the north pole on January 2008 to track this new object.

In addition to all these, I have searched for clues and have found many of them to be fake, some others to be misleading, some others to be connecting it with aliens and so on.

However, there are some videos and writings that could be taken seriously, and at least, under consideration. I mean...what if? I deal a lot with astronomy, I have a telescope myself, and I have seen in astronomical references the existense of a large object, coming towards us , and the possibility to be at its nearest point in around 2012.

So what?

Well, if a large object the size of Jupiter comes anywhere near Earth, the following could or would happen for sure:

1. Lots of huge earthquakes and climate change, cause of the gravity.
2. Cataclysmic events, floods, tsunami etc due to the same reason as above.
3. The asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter would be shaken from the huge celestial body's gravity, causing many asteroids to enter several planet's atmospere, including Earth's.
4. Earth's magnetic field could swap inverse, causing the earth to stop rotating for a while until it would re-align again. Guess its effects on us.

Now, the question is , is anything really approaching us?
I've read instructions on how to protect ourselves from a disaster like this. Hide in high-mountain caves to survive tsunamis, get food supplies for 2 years to survive climate and animal devastation, get oxygen masks to survive volcanic dust etc.

What do you think of all these?

I think it's like being at Gettysburg (The Civil War). One place is as safe as another and there is no safe place. If it happens there will likely be survivors and there is no way of telling who or where.

There is no denying that the Mayans were intelligent and advanced. But look where that got them.

The 'end of the world as we know it' has been occurring and observed by human kind since first cognitive thought. It's nothing new. The 'world as you know it' ends every second as something is always changing that irreversibly alters our existence. The only difference being the scale of the event which changes our existence. Small and subtle changes may not be as apparent as large cataclysmic ones, but a change has occurred nevertheless. Ergo, the 'world as we know it' has ended.

The universe/multi-verse is a volatile place in a constant state of flux. The human species will cease to exist one way or the other at any given time. That much is fact. So too is that our existence will barely register in the 'great time line of the finite/infinite'.
Selecting and focusing on an arbitrary date or event which could theoretically occur, only leads to unnecessary anxiety and obsessive fixation, which is actually more detrimental than simply accepting the things that you cannot change.

If 2012 was to occur, rest assured I wouldn't be happy about it, but I'd be less happy trying to eke out an existence in a post 'civilized' wasteland.

In other words, I wouldn't worry about it.

Whatever common sense i have left it tells me this is just another prophecy, the end has been predicted over and over again since too long ago, and predictions turned out to be consistently wrong, obviously!, but the funny thing about it is that those that talk about the end times always say that it will happen within their lifetime probably a few months or years away, which is very convenient but why not 200, 500 years away? because then nobody would care since we would be dead by then anyway. I think people believe in these things because they want a dramatic change in the world, something to look forward to, then there is the business associated with it and other motives.


Speaking of which, i'm thinking of stocking food supplies and survival stuff, so i can sell them around 2011, might be a good way to make some extra money.

Btw, what effect could this Eris planet really cause, i mean it will be about as far as pluto and it is barely larger than pluto too so i don't see how that can cause any of those things but i'm just guessing.

This is more astronomy than prophecy and if the Mayans were as good as they believed they were and had gone through similar events then maybe they are onto something and gravity is a very powerful force and it's not something you should under estimate.

Another thing to remember is this will start to have effect in the months and weeks before that date and that at least should be enough of a warning for most people to have some sort of action plan to ride out these events. There have been many great civilizations wiped out in the past, so what makes everyone so sure it's not going to happen again.
