Rumor: Windows 9 May Be Revealed Next Week

Currently, there's a rumor started by well-known Russian Windows leaker WZor that Microsoft may actually start talking about Windows 9 "Threshold" during the Worldwide Partner Conference 2014 next week. WZor also believes that Microsoft will use this window to introduce Windows 8.1 Update 2, which will supposedly be released by mid-August.

According to WZor, the new method has users logging into Microsoft Store to activate the platform rather than handing over a key that could be re-sold.

So customers who rent the OS will have no choice but to use Microsoft Store?

Not sure how accurate that rumour is.

However, there is no doubt the Software giants understand the importance of ownership. There have been numerous attempts to wrest it away from the users through the courts, a long and expensive thing to attempt.

They can't do it by legal means.

Enter the subscription. By sheer coincidence, you don't get ownership if you subscribe.

Yep, that is what they have been battling for a long time. They cannot take away those rights legally.

Honestly, a five-seat subscription bundle would be an interesting product.

It would be interesting for sure. All kinds of baubles and sweeties will be on offer, I expect.

Hi there

As one who often tinkers around with different hardware etc I find the whole STORE concept 100% HORRIBLE. If I need to re-install an OS via this "Update only" method then the whole process is BROKEN. The only proper way is to re-install your OS from scratch, and then apply the updates --- the problem with lacking ISO's is that you DO NOT have a proper starting point -- is it the original W8, W8.1, W8.1 update 1 or whatever.

Just look at current Android and Apple apps that are installed via the "Store concept". - It's USUALLY IMPOSSIBLE to get previous versions of apps if for some reason the updated version doesn't work or you prefer say the operation / interface of the previous version.

Ms is buying HUGE problems by limiting / forcing users to go via the STORE route.

Therefore, there is an idea to issue corporate version without these bindings to online and cloud services of Microsoft.

They will have to do something about that issue. Wouldn't surprise me if it is only for corporate products.

Not encouraging for consumers. MS want to "bind us to online and cloud services".

Now we'll see if it is the REAL successor to Windows 7. I have high expectations for "Threshold". If it turns out to be what Microsoft did with Windows 7 and make it BETTER then I'll certainly buy it.

The Enterprise version will likely have different activation options, like it does now.

I would think, even on the consumer side, if you have the install media you can do a clean install and then just activate though the Store. It might even be transparent once you log in with your Live ID. Time will tell.

With the BIG layoff of Microsoft employees coming soon, I'm betting they'll try to get 9 out quicker and 8.2 is just a fill-in. I expect 9 to be heavily "linked" to a home-based (Microsoft) connection.

You will be able to buy a retail box but you wont get a key. You have to go to the Store and it will activate. Its still a rumor so who knows.
