Computerworld - As talk of the next Windows begins to build and some details of what most are calling for now either Windows 9 or Threshold come into focus, it's worthwhile to take a moment to remember Windows 8.
Because Microsoft will want everyone to forget it. And we will.

Maybe and I do mean maybe Microsoft has figured out (again) to stop making products their digbat board members want and start making products their customers want.

win-8 might be as controversial as vista was I believe Metro might of made that possible ?

I'm sure we all remember all of the confusion that win-7 libraries unfolded from x-p,

My Vista which I had for less than a month before my win-7 upgrade disk arrived anyway the transferring or integrating of files from Vista to 7 didn't go so well
I literally had every file in both public and my folders talk about a what factor
Auto sort was also a bummer

I don't think it has anything to do with whether W8 is good or bad. It does please many people just not enough to be a successful operating system judged by sales.
It has all to do with what the market wants.
Microsoft should of studied its established market and the new upcoming market more completely.
That judgement is not all that easy. That is why some products make it and some don't.
Microsoft is like any other company; they want to keep the market they have already established and reach out for new markets. Most of the time this can't be done with just one product. They will need a product that meets the needs and desires of their established market and a new product (portable) that meet the needs and desires of this fast growing new market.
Microsoft must in my opinion get away from the idea one products fits all customers needs and desires and they are going to shove it down the customers throats whether they like it or not to prove they are correct.
Customers dollars spent is in the end the ruler that is use to judge success or not of a product.

Hi there

One thing W7 doesn't do - and I'm sure people MIGHT be interested in to be able to run re-sizeable BORDERLESS / TITLELESS windows -. Some applications - especially on large external monitors could run quite nicely like this - especially if they were dynamically updating the screen -- Stock quotes for instance (user customisable) or many other applications you could think of -- rather like (but infinitely better) the old VISTA gadgets.

What about Movies / video too -- the current programs either run in full screen or run in a titled window -- I think WINDVD a long time ago had a non full screen borderless mode but I've long since given up using that program (VLC is FREE and works even for BLU RAY if you add the l library dll and DB).

W8 doesn't yet do this but it IS a possibility in W9 as the distinction between "Metro" and Classical desktop apps becomes more blurred.

In W7 the only way to get titleless and borderless applications is to run them in Full screen mode. (Of course you should have the option to run them in "Classical Windows" too if that's your choice or full screen too if you prefer).

I could see many users -- giving a presentation at a Work meeting for example having say two power point displays and some dynamically updating screen displays all being displayed on one of those huge 60 - 80 inch screens uncluttered by Window borders and titles.

Only hope of me buying Windows 9 is removing the Metro GUI for PC versions (For Desktops, for some AIOs, and for some laptops especially gaming laptops).

I forgot Win 8 when it first came out and decided to stick with Win 7 for the rig I was planning on building at the time (now my current rig).

I think you may be right on that one...

If you take a look at the past you will see that almost every other Microsoft OS is a flop. I mean, look at the earlier Windows versions, Win ME was a flop, well, 2K wasn't and XP was great, then came Vista and everyone hated it. Then came seven and everyone loves it. A few years later 8 is released and everyone hated that too. If this "pattern" continues Windows 9 may likely be a success.
