Solved How Does One Deal With 163 New Updates?

So I had reinstalled windows for the first time and I have never had to deal with so many new updates at once. I have 163 new important updates and 6 optional updates.

Is it safe to just go and install all 163 important updates at once or is there a special way to install them properly? Are there certain updates I should be avoiding? What about the updates for windows 7 that are optional?

Can someone explain to me what I'm suppose to do with all these updates?

Personally i would install all the Important updates first, then go through the optional and choose which ones i think are important.

True, i just never have the time.

LF is right. There is a smaller risk if you run them in smaller batches. If something happens, it is easier to reset to the restore point and try to figure out what the peoblem is.

In my defence though, every time i do a bunch of updates a system restore point is created.

They are already sorted that way. Just start at the bottom and work your way up.

If something goes wrong and I can't even get into the computer, how would I use a restore point? I've never used them before?

I prefer system images to restore points. In fact, I have System Restore turned off because I've found it to be so unreliable. When installing a new OS, the first thing I do before doing anything is to make an image. Then I run the updates (I've yet to have a problem with updates when running only 15 at a time). After the updates are finished, I make another image. Then I install my security software and make another image after running the scans. After installing and configuring programs, I make another image.

Macrium Reflect Free (here is a good tutorial on how to use Macrium Reflect) is an excellent program for making images.

I usually just blast through all of them with one exception, whether you use it or not, update IE to the latest version you are comfortable with, this will eliminate a bunch of previous updates for earlier versions.

Windows update automatically creates restore points and leaves certain updates unchecked so their pre-requisites are installed first.

You can access system restore from the system recovery options using your install disc as outlined here,

Got lazy and just installed all the recommended updates at once. 2 of them failed though. Some sort of update for IE8 and a security update for visual C++.

The IE8 one made sense why it failed because another update installed IE11.

The security update however did want me to try and install it again and the second attempt it worked.

So now all I have left is 4 optional updates. Can you tell me which ones are worth getting? I really don't know.

Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) 8.0 update for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2

It will work without any problems and even if some updates won't be successfully installed it will try again on next reboot

Microsoft non-releasing SP2 for 7 made us some hard work...

Its your opinion, look at the updates do you use any of them?

Do you use windows media player?
Do you use DTLS?
Ect Ect

Having just done a clean install on Vista, I had a few updates to do....

1) 'Security Update for Windows' - all 100+ of them at once
2) Other 'Update for Windows'
3) Update IE - do NOT upgrade it until all other IE updates are installed
4) .NET Updates (3.5 first, then install .NET4.5 and update it)

Expect to get one or two failing updates in each section - this is normal as the sequencing isn't perfect, and a couple of updates will refuse to install unless they are first in the list.

reboot after each section and do a fresh Check for Updates.

Include any that failed from the previous round, and any from previous sections that have just appeared.

The start with the optional updates - if you want them (I install everything except Bing and Windows Live)
