Random BSOD which started when WD MBL was installed

Hi,

I have been getting random BSOD's which only seemed to start when I installed a My Book Live (WD NAS), before that the system had run faultlessly for a year or more.
I have since uninstalled it and all associated software.
Often it happens when using XBMC, which has never caused any problems before

I also have been having SKYPE issues (screen locks) and have tried rolling back to previous versions with no result.
I thought it may have been an issue with ETRON USB3 ports, so checked drivers and stopped using the ports.
I thought it might be the Logitech C270 webcam so I disconnected the Logitech C270 camera yesterday and ran XBMC playing back to back series all day to test and had no BSOD so thought it must be the camera.

Today, with the camera disconnected it BSOD'ed again.

I am considering doing a reinstall of win7 (never done one before so not that keen) but before I do that, here is the log as requested for someone infinitely more knowledgable than me to look at.

Thanks in advance

Hello and welcome seven of nine I am not really much good on reading those dump files and stuff like it but it certainly sounds like the filing system is sliding south.
Try these for starters and just to eliminate the bleeding obvious:)

download from bleeping computer – delete any rubbishthese find.

If these do not come up with anything try one of these
Five free portable rootkit removers - TechRepublic TDSS Killer is probably as good as any
Another option is

KASPERSKY RESCUE DISK

Download Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10

You will need to make a bootable disk > set the BIOS to boot from either the optical (my preferred way) or a USB stick - again asyou are having problems there stay with the optical. The rest I haven't yet tested yet so am not sure how good they are and I run paid for Kaspersky on all my machines anyway.

What this will do is to scan from power on and check literally everything as it starts up.

Now it does take a fair while to run but just may pick some rubbish malware on it's way into the system.

Let us know how you go.

Now if you go for a clean install use this as it will give you the freshest ISO for the verison of Windows you have already.

TDSS Killer (just ran this)
Thanks, have already done these and found nothing but will plug along with the rest today.

Last night I installed a newer version of XBMC (Gotham 13:2) to see if that had something to do with it.

As for the disc I do have the original Win 7 disc so surely no need for a 3GB download? Thoughts there?

No mate no need I only quoted that as it is the very freshest version you can get - it doesn't take long to get the ISO the making of the bootable disk or USB the only thing I find fiddly.
I am not sure but I think that way actually would include a lot of the updates would be included since the version you have was made so saving time in all those updates, and we all love that function eh??;).
I stand to be corrected of course.
In any case perhaps the new XBMC might fix the problem:)

Nope
Uninstalled a widget that made mention in some blurb of BSOD and let XBMC run while I was out today and it was locked up when I returned.
Restarted and had a BSOD later without XBMC running and had another tonight with it running.

Sounds like clean install time so I prepare to step off into the great unknown.

Ok look no need to rush off just yet we can still do a few more things and I might just ask one of the BSOD boffins to take a look at those files for starters.
We can also look at testing some of the hardware - sounds too simple but sometimes these things often are. So what we need is some more detailed system specs
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/180324-system-info-see-your-system-specs.html to know what we are testing ie RAM hard drive/s PSU etc etc.
Now you can start with this while we are waiting for the others to chip in

Using HW Info PSU

Download HW Info and pick the right bit version -
HWiNFO, HWiNFO32/64 -Download -(copy and paste thissite into the search bar if you do not like clicking on the link) If you do not need the running information in thesmaller right hand panel close it. In the left hand window click on the + forthe individual device groupings and they will open out to the variouscomponents.

Go on opening out further until you get to the device itself. click on it andit will highlight. In the right hand window there will be a very detaileddescription of that device as in brand, speeds model number etc etc These arevery detailed and are just what is needed for searching for drivers etc.

To get the PSU volts you need to select the Sensor buttoncircled in yellow in the pic

See my pic for an example - in this I have shown my power but it is a laptopand a desktop will show more details if you scroll down that listing. Correction the pic is now of my Asus board at home and you just need to scroll down to that spot similar to Nuvoton in the pic send back a pic of that screen so we can see what the volts are.

If you want a more definitive test see this http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/301799-psu-test-dc-output-voltage.html but lease only use a digital multimeter and not an analogue as they inject typically 9v into a circuit to test and into a 3.3v or 5v rail - not a good idea!! see the partial pic of the correct sort of meter in that tutorial.

Hi Seven of nine (Lol, nice username :D).

First of all, uninstall Networx. It is a problem everywhere.

Next, your motherboard should have VIA USB 3, but it seems that you have Etron? Whatever it is, the update is needed.

And, update the driver to your webcam, too. Support + Downloads: HD Webcam C270 - Logitech

Let us know the situation after doing these. Because there are more issues, apparently; but these are the most important things to do.

I had a bit more going on in that list than you so I capped it all because if you look at the bottom of pic 2 you will see a yellow triangle :warn: Vs green tick against the Hdrives so I am wondering what that is about?
Yellow triangle = bad right?

Ok it has one of those readouts for the PSU volts that doesn't show thevolts as per they usually do per my pic. The only one I can see is ok is theVbatt battery status (CMOS / BIOS).

The only sure way of testing the volts is that other link I posted earlier, it is a physical test and is not open to any variations that a software based test may put on the test.
The temps look good too so no problems there/

Now I think it would be a very good idea to run a test on that drive withthe yellow triangle I am not real sure re the Samsung test stuff and the Seatools is probably ass good as anything for a starting point. SeaTools for Windows | Seagate

By the by how old is the machine as that particular drive is an unusual size these days and is that drive the boot device?
Now it might be an idea to back it up now in case it is going south and any data saved to wherever you want to.

The smaller drives migrated across from other builds.
Looks like both fail using the seagate test
1 failed using hddscan
None fail if using chkdsk, weird

I am close to dropping in another 2x3 or 4TB in the box anyway but the issue now is I dont want my C drive on a big one.

I do have a couple of other smaller drives in caddies, but they are of a similar vintage , with less use, to the ones that are failing.

A NEW C drive would be the solution but small ones cost as much as a 1TB.

Should I perhaps consider a 120gb SSD as a C drive?
SSD - MSY Online

I did a backup the other day when I was considering a re install using backup and restore and doing a copy and paste onto a separate drive.

An SSD is a must in my mind my friend you will be astonished at the speed of boot etc.
A 120GB is about right for that and some space left over for data which can be transferred later. There are tutorials for installing and transferring data in this forum.

Just one thing please research the SSD's first as cheap or expensive is no promise it is going to be good.

My suggestions are the Samsung's Crucial or SanDisk all brands I use in my five machines and have had no issues at all. Probably the best are the Samsung's - the EVO is the sweet spot:)

But ask in the forum and you will get a flood of advice and it is your choice but it can make deciding very convoluted:p
