PaintShop Pro=Color scheme has been changed to windows 7 basic

Hi group (my first post).

I've been using PaintShop Pro ver 9 (pre-Corel) for many years. When I open the program in my new computer, I get this message:

"The color scheme has been changed to windows 7 basic."

The program seems to run fine. Is there some setting I should tweak to make Windows happier about PSP9?

I'm not using a Windows theme. My desktop background is a grid (white lines on black; I position my icons within the squares). Please let me know if there are other setting you need to know.

HP Pavilion 500-281 desktop 64 bit; Windows Home Premium.

P.S. Just noticed something: when PSP is running, websites have a solid-blue border; if I close PSP, the borders instantly become transparent.

Use Clean boot,

Click Start and type in the search box,
msconfig
Click on the suggestion on top or hit the Enter key,
Go to the Startup section and take some screen shots for a complete list,
Go to the Services section and on the bottom left Check the box to Hide All Microsoft services,
Repeat the screen shots,

Clean boot didn't help. Opening PaintShop Pro while in clean boot still resulted in the color scheme being changed to windows 7 basic, and the transparent window borders switching to solid/opaque.

The prior link should of showed you how to use clean boot,

Click Start and type in the search box,
advanced system settings
Click on View advanced system settings,
You should now be on System Properties and the Advanced section,
click on the Performance Settings button,
Visual effects switch to Adjust for best appearance Apply and Okay,
Post what it's set on prior to changing,

Assuming you mean the services on the msconfig list, here are the screenshots.

Performance Settings was previously set on Let Windows Choose.

I changed it as per your instructions to Adjust for Best Appearance.

Closed and reopened PaintShop Pro 9, and Windows still changes the color scheme to Windows 7 basic.

I don't think you are going to be able to do anything to "fix" this. The oldest version of PSP that is listed as "compatible" with Win7 is PSP X2, which is newer than the version you have.

PSP9 is evidently incompatible with the Aero display feature in Win7, thus forces a change to a non-Aero desktop.

Yup, that's what I figured, too. I just thought I'd try here as a last resort. I can live with the way Windows grumbles every time I open Jasc PSP 9. I've tried more recent versions, but like so many other PSP fans, have been disappointed with the Corel products.

One last question, please: Can I set Windows to default to the Windows 7 Basic color theme? In other words, can I opt out of the transparent borders/"glass" appearance? If so, I assume this require changing my "theme." I don't use any of the themes included with Windows; I use a background image (a jpg found online and saved in C:\users\owner\appdata\roaming\microsoft\internet explorer), and I manually arrange my desktop icons/folders/shortcuts. If I select one of the built-in themes, such as Windows 7 Basic (thinking perhaps this might solve the problem under discussion), would I be able to continue to ALSO use my preferred background (a grid of white lines on black; stretched to fix the monitor)?

Use windows classic theme if basic isn't for you classic is more like x-p :/
I don't have any issues with cd6 ?

I have the same issue with Adobe Illustrator CS2. It's just too old.

If I switch to Windows Classic theme, will I still be able to use my grid background "ON TOP" of it (please see my previous post)?

Even windows classic allows for custom background images and desktop shortcuts :/

I set Windows to the Windows Classic 7 Theme, started PaintShop Pro 9, and it still popped up a message that the color scheme was being changed to Windows 7 Basic.

Sigh.
