Just keep in mind that OEM versions are designed to be installed onto 1 computer and it cannot be moved to another computer at a later time. And with OEM versions, you don't get direct support from Microsoft but rather the system builder...which in the case of a home hobbyist...you would contact yourself for support.

Yes, and i know you are just informing us as to how it is SUPPOSED to be. However to all of those who are not aware, everything you have said is true but you CAN install OEM as many times as you like. When activating call Microsoft and tell the rep that you have just upgraded some hardware on your pc. They will give you an activation code.

I have an OEM of Windows XP PRO that I bought in early '02 and I have had it on at least 5 machines since. From the original p4 2.4ghz to my core2duo I have now.

Hello, I'm new here... and I'm running a 10year old Dell with XP. I'm building a new computer for myself based on a Core I5, and am in the dark about OEM versions of Win7. Were I to install an OEM copy on my new machine would I be able to activate it? Thanks Alboggs.

Install the OEM 7 on the new machine and when you are ready activate it on line; will not be a problem.

Actually the win741 site offers Professional as well.

You have to click on the thing that asks if your institution requires you to join a domain, and then Professional is available too. They just sort of hide it in case you don't really need it.

And yes, after you submit your email, the link they send you to buy is tied to you personally. It's that specific link they provide in email you don't want to forward on.

Order Directly from Microsoft Store and you get the FULL RETAIL VERSION for the same price.

I bought 2 copies of windows pro. With the win741 site you only get the upgrade version and you have to choose which bit (32 or 64) plus it is 13 bucks for the disk.

Read about it in this thread

Hey Jacen. I saw your thread about this already.
This thread is about the OEM discounts, not a student pricing.

First and only warning.

The answer is yes, you can activate it.

The OEM version is spose to be installed on only one computer, like a Dell (OEM), you can re-install it on the same machine and activate it again.
If you change the hard drive you can call MS and get a new activation code.

Do you think they might go lower for OEM prices around Christmas or Thanksgiving? I think I'm gonna snag it up soon, I dont see those low prices lasting very long.

I have never called MS for any support in my 20 years of PC building. Come to think of it, I haven't called any software or hardware company for any support. The only people I have had to call for support was cable company or telephone company for Internet/router/modem issues.
