Microsoft reveals Windows 10, Well this is awkward!

Microsoft has announced that Windows 10 will be the name of its next operating system (OS).

The choice is a surprise bearing in mind it represents a jump from the last version - Windows 8.

The software will run on a wide range of devices from smartphones and tablets to PCs and Xbox games consoles, with applications sold from a single store.

It also marks the return of the Start Menu, which had been removed from Windows 8.

In addition to offering a list of the user's favourite applications, the menu also brings up resizable tiles - similar to those featured in Windows 8's touch-centric interface - on PCs and tablets.

First, in my opinion the name is not only clever but also well-founded; the first videos and images I have seen really show such a major change that skipping a version number works. I see some clever psychological marketing here: usually the first sequence of the version number is incremented by one but now Microsoft wants to tell us the changes are so significant it's a two digit change.

Microsoft says the technical preview of Windows 10 for PCs will come out on Wednesday and will be available at Preview.Windows.com. Microsoft said that Windows 10 will likely ship at some point in mid-2015.​

:roflmao::roflmao::roflmao:All seriousness aside, there are people like you who do like Win 8 (and that's fine; except for the rinky-dink GUI, it is an improvement over Win 7 in many ways) but you are in a minority (and there is nothing wrong with that, either). Based on sales figures, it is a dismal flop with most people.

Once the feature comes out, though, it will automatically adjust Windows for 2-in-1 tablet-computer hybrids so that it can automatically detect whether there’s a keyboard and mouse hooked up to the device and offer the more desktop-friendly version of the UI. Conversely, Windows 10 also features a “tablet mode” that will automatically pop up whenever you touch the screen.

That is what they should have done from the very beginning. Why they waited until now to realise this is incredible. That is how to easily please people and not making things hard on average users (or annoy experienced users). I liked windows 8 on a tablet, but not a laptop/desktop. So far windows 10 is taking good steps, and it is looking like they will actually really listen to feedback this time. So I am happy for that.


Let's see though if this keeps up.

Why is everyone making such a big deal over name. I can think of only one person the name affects, that would be John as he has to change the web site name. There was an OS named XP, and one named ME, and another named Vista, then there was 7 and then 8. What does a name have to do with anything? I was not and am not a fan of Windows 8/8.1, but there are those that are. I am not a fan of Soccer either, but millions are. so what? I am not so concerned with what the call it as I am with how it operates and will it fulfill my needs. That's what should be under discussion here, not the name. Personally, I could care less what they name it. Leave it as Windows Threshold, for all I care. I just want a good, efficient Desktop OS. That's all that really matters.

Calling it W10 instead of W9, has generated a lot of attention/discussion.

A personal view:
From a technical perspective of course the name means absolutely nothing. From a marketing perspective ($$$) it does mean something. That is why corporations will spend large amounts of money to protect their brand name. So the name change is at least a little intriguing.

Hi there

Obviously there are some diehards on this forum who are trashing it before they've even SEEN it -- same with Windows 8.1 -- most people probably rightly decided Windows 8 was a hideous digs dinner of a mess but windows 8.1 improved it significantly -- and now Windows 10 has got the things most people wanted back in it - like the Start menu and re-sizeable windows for touch / metro apps what is the problem.

I LIKE the superior touch applications, the built in security system, the "Virtual" cd/dvd mounter and the general snappiness of W8.1 - and with the final improvements seen to be in Windows 10 what's there really NOT to like - it seems win 7 users have everything they asked for in the new OS.

At least let's SEE and TRY it before mouthing complaints against it.

If you want to continue using W7 -- nothing wrong with that - it's STILL a great OS -- but please keep OPEN MINDS and base complaints on REAL tests.
