but wouldn't that install all updates including sp1 and other security updates whereas i only want the sp1 to be installed and nothing else... thanks!

No. If you don't want automatic updates you can turn them off when you click change settings.

If you insist on installing only SP1, you can download it from:

that's coz i have only 6GB of free space on my C:\drive.... my laptop came with a 20GB ssd and a 320GB hdd.. i installed the windows on the SSD and the program files on the hdd...

Is the performance gain really worth all that trouble?
Maybe consider using the SSD for caching, and install windows on your bigger drive. would improve your overall loading performance (at the cost of some start up time).

yeah i tried that probably a thousand times.. but the ssd gets flushed after a few days... why else do you think i used what i am using now... anyways i installed windows 7 sp1 and i still have 7 gb of free space.. earlier it was 7.61 gb...
