WMP freezes playing Xvid avi

I am on win7 x64 7600 RTM
playing Xvid /avi movies WMP freezes for few mins then after 5-7 mins again start playing normally, assuming it could be codec problem I installed Klite along with media player classic, but even that does not work .

What is the source of the problem?
I tried KMplayer too but that also freeze

Do I need to install x64 version of Klite or will 32 bit version do the job?

I tried VLC latest version but that also does the same freeze.

Is it windows7 problem or the xvid I am playing, I have tried playing 8-10 of them they all have this problem.

I had a similar problem with both the 32 and 64bit versions of 7. I solved the problem by turning off the "write-cache buffer" on the hard drive.

Try KMplayer or WMPClassic.

Try running a chkdsk on you HDD - maybe the indexes are corrupted hence the sticking.

download and install k-lite mega codec pack with mpc(media player classic) in it. avoid window media player.

I have been pulling my hair all these days with no solutions yet.

all players kmplayer,VLC, Klite MPC WMP & any other I could lay my hand on installed 1 by 1 but none solved the problem.

The movie freezes randomly for few mins & now its even happening with other video file formats not just avi/xvid. I have been using Win7 x64 since build 7000 but never had such problems.

Running chkdsk did not find any indexes corrupted so that does not seem to be the problem.

did this occur when you installed windows 7 or shortly after? the reason i ask i have seen in both vista and xp that some times shortly after installing the os i will out of the blue start having problems with my vids. i end up doing a triple secure wipe of c and then reinstall the os and i do not get the problem again. i figure it must have been some setting or piece of software i was using at the time. just an idea to explore.

i noticed above that even vcl won't play them. it is strange that wmp will play them and vcl will not. it should be the other way around. i am now thinking have someone test the files on their system. if they work on vcl and mpc there then you need to reformat.

Seems some misunderstanding,
I meant that all media players are able to play these files but they all hang the OS for few mins then continue again, this happens with all the xvids (for sure) but lately .flv files downloaded from youtube are also doing the same now.

Seems my problem is solved today when I tried playing the xvid in Jriver media center, I watched the whole movie without any problem, though I still don't know the source of the problem but I will keep my finger crossed & try other xvids next few day to confirm.

I have 4 hdd do I need to turn off "write-cache buffer" on all drives or just the OS drive (seagate 1.5TB HDD)?

only turn off if you are using an ssd drive. if you have to turn it off on a sata drive there is some other problem.

I have removed it from my (non SSD) 1.5Tb SATA drive and it did solve the video problem and I have never had a problem with the setup. The computer is used solely as a media centre using Windows 7 media centre software (x64), with it I watch all sorts of media files (mostly full HD 1080p using K-Lite Mega Codecs x32 and x64), TV, mp3, pictures you name it... The setup is very stable and works like dream. Before removing the write cache avi, mkv files were unwatchable because they used to stop and restart. Personally I don't see a problem in removing the write cache on all your drives - it should make the system more responsive.

I have the same issue, first it came with the new PotPlayer. Later it did with KMPlayer then with WMP as well. The problem occurs with only xvid videos, every x264-encoded stuff was good except one.
I disabled the write cache but the issue has remained.
I almost forget it: I bought a new HDD (WD5000BEVT, changed from another WD), the problem occurs only since then.
