During boot up today I was met with a flashing blue log-in screen, unable to choose any user, it just simply kept flashing for all eternity.

I'm able to operate in safe-mode.

Well; for now; I would try this and see what happens: reboot into safe mode; log into windows if possible; then do a system restore back to before this started happening and see what happens: click start, programs, accessories, then system restore and see if you can find a restore point that is dated before this event started happening. Run the restore for that date and see if it resolves your issue. If not post back.

Also noteworthy is that before I could not open Windows explorer, no matter what. Then I rebooted and this started to happen.

Sounds like a massive virus/malware hit with software that we all have in common, to be honest.

We tried Mercury's solution and it did not fix the problem. I attached a screenshot. After running it, the user tried locking his computer and it locked up again.

It is bitdefender for whoever is using it.

Bitdefender update went out this morning and killed something.

did a restore to earlier date on one system. worked fine again.
