I have XP home & Pro. I also have Vista. All three activated. I plan on keeping the XP Pro for my shop use. Question... I am going to go the upgrade route. Would it be better to upgrade with XP or Vista? I plan on doing a clean install, either way. I'm wondering what's going to happen when, in the future, when we need or want to re-install Windows 7 to get that fresh start environment. I tend to install a lot of cute little programs that seem like a good idea at the time but seem to never be that useful later on.

I forgot about the fact that you're not supposed to use the qualifying OS anymore. So in this case it would be better to upgrade from Vista. That way you can continue to use XP without violating the license agreement.

All of my systems still run fastest on XP 32-bit for the most part. Win7 is fun to play with, but I still prefer XP for raw speed, security, and functionality.
So if I upgrade from XP, I can no longer use my XP at all, forever?

Since I have 1 Vista and 2 XP's (home & Pro) I'm leaning towards using the XP home since that Key will be killed after installation of 7. I have several ide hard drives that I no longer use. I plan on using Clonezilla and making a complete backup in case my new install ever goes south on me. At least I'm hoping that will work.

yeah in that case I would use XP home as a basis for the upgrade.

I've never used Clonezilla, so I can't comment on that.

I'm not sure if the XP key would be "killed" instantly. Quite possible, but it might also be possible to call up Microsoft and get a new key should you need to clean install Windows 7 again in the future.

At this point I'm not sure about anything. We can all thank Microsoft for making this so clear.

Question... I am going to go the upgrade route. (exactly what do you mean UPGRADE Route.??)

Would it be better to upgrade with XP or Vista?
I plan on doing a clean install, either way. If you clean install this is not considered UPGRADE is is considered a NEW OS.

I'm wondering what's going to happen when, in the future, when we need or want to re-install Windows 7 to get that fresh start environment. (This will be considered - if clean install exactly that a NEW OS.)

(Cute little programs are just that - depends on if they work with the OS you plan on using..)

Your questions are mute and as you stated you will CLEAN install ea NEW OS. therefore "UPGRADE" IS MUTE AND NOT EVEN CONSIDERED.

since you are not actually upgrading this question is no valid.

exactly what do you mean UPGRADE Route.??

I took "upgrade route" to mean he is going to purchase the "upgrade" version of Windows 7 rather than the full version. In that case I would still consider it an "upgrade" even though he would have to do a clean install.

I plan on doing a clean install, either way. If you clean install this is not considered UPGRADE is is considered a NEW OS. If I'm using the UPGRADE disk, and I am going from XP to 7... Is that not upgrading my system?

I am only talking about using the Windows 7 UPGRADE version (disk) because of the cost difference. It's too easy to save files and data to worry about not having to reinstall a few programs. I would rather spend a couple of nights reinstalling stuff than to sit in front of the TV anyway. Not to mention the saved $$'s

Sorry I didn't read them all. You are correct. I have pre ordered the Windows 7 upgrade.

You can use Windows 7 "Upgrade" Disk an still do a CLEAN install.
Just do not enter a KEY and when ask - advanced - clean.
The same as under Vista.

When you use "upgrade" and upgrade your vista then you loose the right to continue and use Vista. But if you Clean install, and then upgrade Win7 via the "UPgrade" disk, you still have the right to use Vista.

UPGRADE in that you are booted into XP. then insert the UPGRADE Vista Disk, and enter your Vista Key, YOU LOOSE THE RIGHT TO CONTINUE TO USE VISTA. SO IF YOU BOOT INTO XP AND INSERT THE WIN7 DISK, YOU CAN NOT UPGRADE. NOT ALLOWED. YOU MUST DO A CLEAN INSTALL. THEREFORE YOU DO NOT LOOSE THE RIGHT TO CONTINUE TO USE XP.

The Upgrade option is not available in Windows 7 Setup when installing Windows 7 on a computer running Windows XP. However, you can use Windows Easy Transfer to migrate files and settings from Windows XP to Windows 7 on the same computer. To do this, you must first copy files to a removable media, such as an external hard drive or UFD, or to a network share. Next, you will install Windows 7 and then migrate your files back from the removable media onto your computer. When you are finished, you must install your software programs again, but your files and settings will have been copied from Windows XP.
How ever you can do the "???upgrade???" by following link below.

Didn't we already conclude that he should use XP Home as a basis for the upgrade? Clean install? Yes? Didn't we already discuss that too? What is the point you're trying to make? And can you convey your point in a complete sentence with the caps lock off please? Thank you.
