Microsoft WU to provide a patch to fix December 10, 2014 article ID

Microsoft Windows Update just released this morning (here) a patch to remove the December 10, 2014 Knowledge Base Article ID: 3004394, which brings additional problems and can also cause the inability to install future updates.

Note that only Windows 7 Editions are impacted by this issue...

Issue for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1
We have found that this update is causing additional problem on computers that are running Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. This includes the inability to install future updates.

The KB 3004394 update does not cause any known problems on the other systems for which it is released. We recommend that you install the update on the other systems.

An update is available to remove KB 3004394 from Windows 7 SP1-based and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1-based computers. For more information, see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

For those who got problems with the first update, isn't it a catch 22 to release a new update to fix the previous one when the problem with the previous one is: "You cannot install Windows updates after KB 3004394 is installed on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2"

Does this mean there is suppose to be another fix again for the batch of updates that was just released? I mean will it cause me to not be able to install future updates? Cause i just installed the batch that came down the pipe the other day and so far ive had no issues thus far. But will this cause the inability to install updates for 7 the next time there is another batch?

All I did was remove KB 3004394 and rebooted. Then checked for updates again and nothing was offered.
Now the problem is; do I not get updates because their is none needed or has something gone wrong and I can't get updates.
I can still get updates to MSE using Windows 7 Updates.
I'm thinking that I will just have to wait until next month and see what happens.

I did the exact same thing and I'm getting the same results from WU.

I just checked for updates again and my system seems to be going through the motions of checking and replies that the system is up to date.

I ran a SFC scan and it reported that there were no problems. Like you I guess I will wait and see. Although I'm really not looking forward to another update cycle. MS sure has damaged my trust in their ability to safely provide proper updates. Like others have said I'll be postponing updates for a time to see how they go.

This does pose the question that if everyone starts waiting to see if the updates are without issue who will be the first to try them?

I think the best now is to let KB3004394 on your machine, then let Windows Update fix it with the new coming padded hotfix KB3024777. Just to be sure it had not messed up the all process.

I did the same thing, uninstalled KB 3004394 even though I didn't see any problems...

Out of curiosity to test if WU is still working (without waiting a month) I uninstalled another update.
Rebooted, and that update is available again.
I installed it and need to reboot again.

I'm going to Restore a Backup Image from before this months Patch BETA Tuesday updates.
I'm getting tired of this monthly nonsense, seems to be getting worse not better.

I wish I had a backup from prior to the update, another lesson learned the hard way . My most recent full image is from 12/1.

For now the best I can do is a system restore created prior to the update. I am hesitant about doing that but probably will as I fear sooner or later this will come back to bite me. The longer I wait the more difficult things will become.

That's exactly what I did. Left KB3004394 installed as it caused zero problems and just switched on my machine to see that KB3024777 was being offered so I installed it.

These Windows Updates issues never bother me too much. I've always got a choice of several backups to roll back to in the event of problems!
