Solved How can I disable Office Starter

How can I temporarily disable Microsoft Office Starter.

Click on the Windows Start Orb (lower left corner) and click Run.
Manually type in msconfig and click OK.
If you have an entry for MS Office Starter in the Startup Tab, uncheck it, and re-boot.
Does that help ?

I am doing some experiments with various non-Microsoft 'word' progammes.

Nevertheless, I like to disable it untill I need it again.

What I understand from this reply is that, it is impossible to disable the Word Starter and only un-installing is possible?

Try using MS Autoruns to see if you can find what's starting it.

I agree, needs to be uninstalled. However, probably the only way to get it back would be with the Factory Restore as that's where the install files are and can't be extracted separately. I've never run into any problems with it when installing WordPerfect, LibreOffice, OpenOffice, IBM Lotus Symphony, etc. [Last 3 are freebies]

Before uninstalling Office Starter and later doing a Factory Restore I would create a System Backup image and restore that when done testing.

I don't have Office Starter, but I don't understand why it needs to be uninstalled ???

Before you uninstall see: Download Full Version of Microsoft Office 2010 Starter Edition Free - AskVG

The best part of Starter edition is that it also allows you to create a portable version of it which can be carried on USB drive to use in other computer systems. Just launch "Office Starter To-Go Device Manager" from "All Programs -> Microsoft Office Starter" menu. It'll take approx. 400 MB of your USB drive.

I would create Office Starter-to-Go stick from the installed application on your machine. Links change, software gets removed from servers ...

If you don't care about Office Starter (i.e. ever reinstalling it), then sure, just uninstall it.

The AskVG link also provides alternatives to Office Starter and MS has the Office Online. I think you need a MS account to use them though.
Try Office Online to see if Office Starter docs/sheets can be opened, read, modified, and saved.

I use Apache Open Office and it can open all sorts of formats - I don't recall having any issues converting between an MS Office file format and an Apache OpenOffice format. LibreOffice is a branch off of OpenOffice that some members prefer.

So you have many choices - now all you have to do is decide.

Historically, OpenOffice was part of Sun Micro and was touted as an Open Source version of Star Office. When Sun sold to Oracle some 4 years or so ago OpenOffice went to Apache. LibreOffice is a similar but separate Open Source program from The Document Foundation, I prefer it over OpenOffice because version 4 and earlier can work with Microsoft Works files where OpenOffice dropped that feature sometime in the various version 3.x offerings, at least the version 4 I've tried can't open Works files.

Thank you very much Bill. Yes, you certainly gave me many choices, and they kept me busy all morning I have already created 'Starter to-Go stick'. The embarrassing thing is that this option was lying there for years, among my 'All Programmes' and I was utterly ignorant of the fact!

1. Is there any way to down-load 'Autoruns', without the Command Line version (Autorunsc). Both versions are given in the same link.

2. If I use the other link 'Run Autoruns now from Live.Sysinternals.com', does it run 'on-line' without downloading. Clicking on the link offers only the 'Save file' option.

I'm not sure what you're looking for re: Autoruns. The command line option is just another way to run Autoruns (you get both the Windows AND the command line options).

The Live AutoRuns is more of a 'portable version' - you still have to download it, but there are no to minimal install requirements (you can put it on a thumb drive and run it on any machine). Think of it more like a live CD (Hirens, Ultimate ... etc) although it does not create a bootable thumbdrive - you can simply put it on a bootable thumbdrive.

Download Autoruns and Autorunsc When I looked at this link, I thought it contained two separate files (one with the normal Windows version and the other with the Command Line version). As it seemed unnecessary for me to use the latter version, I thought it would be good if I can leave it out, so that I don't down-load things that are not useful to me. Looks like a mistaken idea!
