Solved Windows Photo Viewer Delay, Openning Wierdly

SOLVED: Upating/reinstalling my Nvidia graphics card drivers seemed to fix the problem and files open normally again.

When I open explorer, the first picture opens normally. Then if I wait a couple seconds, or close and open explorer again or leave it for a few seconds and go back to it, the second time i open a photo(same one or different one) has a 4 second delay before photo viewer opens. I can keep clicking the photo during this and it will result in multiple openings. If I click just once on a different photo during the delay, it opens that photo instead. It's always the second time I try to open a photo after waiting several seconds or re opening explorer. If open a photo and just minimize it, the second one opens fast.

I just reinstalled my OS onto an SSD, and didnt have this problem before. I've used custom ICC profiles before and never had this problem (not using one currently). It doesnt matter if the file is on my SSD or another HDD.

Nope, it doesnt behave like this. But I would prefer to use windows viewer and it's controls. At least would like to fix this first before having to resort to third party programs on a clean installation of windows...

How many image files do you have on the HDD? It's my experience having a lot of images does slow the viewer down as it has to 'read' all the files available to it. I also notice it when manually accessing image files stored on an External USB Drive.

Tens of thousands. But that's not it because I have 2 HDDs, external HDDs, flash drives, and SSD, i get the same behavior on all regardless of how many images, and I never have this before reinstalling windows or the SSD.

It also doesnt matter if i'm in the actual folder, or the pictures library.

It's not typical "slowness", it's a weird behavior. The first image I open is instantly. I think Berton is probably correct. If you don't get the problem when opening a folder located say - on your desktop that contains only a few images then it would seem to confirm his theory.

As an experiment you can try this. I know you don't wish to use other software but just try creating your own defined thumbnail cache location and allow the program to load thumbnails from it just to see if it's fast.

I DO get the problem on any drive. Other image views are fast and work fine, but I dont prefer their controls.

The only thing that works is to open an image, minimize it, and open other images. It's as if I have to leave windows photo viewer running, and closing it and reopening it causes the problem. But I dont know why, I never had this before or on any other computer.

A suggestion

Thanks for the info - so it seems that none of the recognized fixes for known problems work. The only thing that I can think of is perhaps you might like to run a check for image file corruption and removal of non image data.

Cuz i have the "exact" same problem as djvtech. First time opening an image it run smooth, close it, then try to open another one after a few second, it delayed.. and also like this

During this delay if I click pictures more, it will result in opening it several times. If I just highlight another picture, it opens that one instead.

and sometimes it doesn't even showing the picture, just an empty windows photo viewer with "Loading..." written in it.
It's really weird, it's like when you close the photo viewer, it kills the processes, and when you tried to open it again, it fails to load the processes smoothly/correctly.. :/

Nope.

The only temporary workaround I found is to open and image, minimize it, then I'm able to open and close images in explorer without the hang. it's like windows photo viewer window has to be running, but if it's closed and I try to open another image it wont open that image for a few seconds.

THIS WORKED! I already had updated my nvdia drivers a few days ago, and just checked the opening files now and it's working normal again! Thanks anyways, i would not have known what changed it otherwise.
