no RC to Retail?!

Rumor is, that is how it is going to work. But that is not ideal if it means you must actually install and activate the previous version of Windows before upgrading. It would be nice to be able to do a clean install on a brand new computer using the upgrade media.

I agree and surely hope it will be that way, and I have seen many people saying so, but I think it might not; it would mean MS is giving a big break to the people using the RC, since the upgrade version is less expensive than the full version. I myself built a new computer and am running the RC in it, I don't have any paid OS in that machine. If I can buy the upgrade and do a clean install, based on having the RC there, I would save some money. I just have my doubts MS would "pay" me that much for having tested it. Although I hope so...
I will end up buying the full version so I can upgrade hardware in the future anyway

In Vista you could just upgrade it over top of itself, clean install using the upgrade media without installing (or even owning) any previous version of Windows. It was a cool trick but I'm willing to bet Microsoft killed it (not that I would blame them for doing so).

Well, wouldn't that not be an upgrade though, but a fresh install if there was never an OS on the HDD? Or are you saying, have the install do a clean install over whatever was there? If the later, I just can't see how they will verify anything.

Sounds like a dog chasing it's tail. Glad I still have my MSDN and have the RTM version.

I suppose it depends on the definition of "upgrade".

To me, moving from Vista to Windows 7 is an upgrade in any shape form or fashion. Clean install, in-place upgrade, or otherwise.

Yes, You can clean install with a Upgrade Disk. when ask for the KEY select NO, the (READ the fine print). continue and it is CLEAN install which has 30 days to activate. Instantly upon booting to the final version. DO NOT INSTALL ANY OTHER PROGRAMS... JUST re insert the DVD disk again, it will ask if you want to UPGRADE, click yes, when ask insert the UPGRADE KEY. when finished, move to control panel, system, and click ACTIVATE NOW.

The easiest way I know to make about $100.00 a hour.

Snuffy, that trick worked with Vista, but the rumors are saying that it won't with Windows 7. It seems as though Microsoft is closing that loophole. What I want to know is, if I use a full version media disc to do the install, and don't insert a key (who does during install...why would you?), can I later, within those 30 days, pop in the upgrade key and activate? I'm guessing not, but again, nothing's been finalized.

If you use a full version disk of Windows 7 you must use a corresponding key to activate... you cant use an upgrade key to activate a full version install of Windows 7.

That could be another change then. I swear I used a full disc from TechNet to install, and activated using an OEM upgrade key from Dell, with Vista x64. Maybe I'm not remembering right, but I thought I did this before.

I'm fairly certain I activate a full install (using a TechNet disc) with an upgrade key. I can't prove it, so there isn't much to go on for a discussion, but I ordered three upgrades from Dell with three new laptops about three years ago. I never liked doing an upgrade install, so I had Vista already installed using my TechNet disc on one of the laptops...without a key. Within the 30 days, I thought I put in the upgrade key, and activated it.

NO, you can not activate a clean install simply by inserting the upgrade key.

NO you can not ACTIVATE the FULL install with the UPGRADE KEY.
Yes, you can boot to - insert the DVD and when ask click "upgrade" and when ask insert the UP GRADE KEY. Average time to UPGRADE takes from
2 hours to 48 hours... depends on what all you have installed, what all upgrade are needed. (most upgrades done this method take for the average home owners 2.5 to 3.5 hours.

No, you can not insert the UPGRADE KEY when you did a CLEAN INSTALL.
How ever is you used a RETAIL Disk to clean install - did not insert a key,
used REARM to keep you early install working... receive you DISK and your RETAIL KEY, then you and open system, click change key, insert the NEW RETAIL KEY - then click Activate that will work...
A UPGRADE KEY must be used when you UPGRADE. A Retail Key can not be inserted to UPGRADE, A RETAIL Key can be used to CLEAN Install and Activate.

PS: That info is not called a "TRICK" nor is it a HACK or a CRACK.
It is stated in the manual with which Microsoft sends with the "UpGRADE" disk set... PS: Vista Ultimate also included both x64 and x86 DVDs.
