Monitor losing signal after installing GPU drivers (NVIDIA)

Every time i install the GPU drivers for my Zotac GTX 780, the computer starts crashing a minute or two after the boot. I can access the desktop for a short period of time before the monitor goes black and/or loses signal. Sometimes I can't access it at all.

There are no problems when not having any GPU drivers installed.

I have tried the following;
* Installing older GPU drivers (several old versions, wiped all old files both manually and by using software)
* Reinstalling the OS (changing from win8.1 to win7)
* Turned off automatic Windows Update so that they don't interfere with NVIDIA's (GPU drivers)
* Changing the cable and monitor

Feels like I've tried everything and nothing works!

Its possible something has happened to your card hardware wise but probably not likely. It was working fine before and you updated then started having these issues, or it's a new card and you are having the issues from the get go? the drivers you tried were these correct? I got in for five minutes, thinking I had solved it, but instead I got the error message "Display Driver Stopped Responding and has recovered" twice before the monitor showed "No signal"

Its possible something has happened to your card hardware wise but probably not likely. I never updated. It just happened over night. It worked fine for months and suddenly this happened. I've tried wiping the old drivers and I'm certain it's the correct drivers. I tried several OLD versions but nothing works.

To test it being a issue with your card or your monitor try booting into something like a live cd of ubuntu if you can. that will rule out windows and their drivers. sounds like card keeps trying to put your monitor into a resolution or possibly refresh rate state it can not accept. Does it run fine in safe mode?

It runs perfectly fine in safe mode. Even without drivers it runs without a single problem. It's so odd because I have not updated anything nor have I changed anything and this just happened randomly. I could try changing the refresh rate from 60 to 50 on the monitor, but I've also tried my LCD TV. Feels like it could be a overheating problem but it seems to run at 40 degrees celsius. Also sometimes it works for a minute, last time it worked for 5 minutes but each time I restart it in a row, it doesnt work at all. Only if I let it rest as far as I know.

Might be an issue with the mode it is is in with no drivers (low power and prob only 2d), then with drivers all that amps up. I would install something like EVGA precision and see what it thinks is happening with it.

Problem is I can't keep the computer on while drivers are installed. I had MSI Afterburner on without drivers and it spiked to 100% a few times, but I don't know how precise it is without drivers. Once I install the drivers I get problems. Only thing I can think of right now is try my brothers 760 and see if the same thing happens. I just don't understand why this is happening. Any other thoughts?

Do you have more than one pci-e x16 port that you can try on that board? Also updating your system specs on the forum would help much with this type of thing. Also what spiked in afterburner, was it temp or power consumption?

Hi there,

I am having a similar problem after a fresh install of windows. My pc keeps getting no signal after boot and getting to the "loading windows" screen. I'm yet to find a fix.

However, everything in safe mode seems to work perfectly..

I'm going to try an uninstall/reinstall of my nvidia drivers and see if that helps. The problem has only seemed to occur since windows updates etc

Just a thought when you guys are cleaning your old drivers what are you doing to clean them, as in what method are you using to do it. Brettyb your issue may not be the same if you are using SLI, are you?

I was just going to log into safe mode and then uninstall the drivers from control panel. Reboot then reinstall. And yes i am using SLI on my 560ti cards

There are better ways to clean out after that but try this.

1. Uninstall via control panel.
2. Put one card in only and install.
3. Reboot, if all is good shutdown and install second card without sli bridge and boot.
4. Reinstall (without removing) drivers again and reboot.
5. If all is good shutdown put on bridge and boot and enable sli in nvidia control panel.

250 GB Samsung SSD Basic 840
ASUS Z97-AR Motherboard
Zotac GTX 780 OC Graphics card

I think it was the GPU usage that spiked in afterburner.

I'm gonna try the other pci-e port on the board

It only seem to do it the one time, it now I think everything seems normal, so far!

UPDATE: just noticed after another reboot windows now hangs on the "preparing desktop screen" and getting the odd pc freeze. I removed the 2nd card, which seemed to be causing the problem. Im thinking a dead card possibly ? whats your thoughts ?

The other slot did not work. It worked for a longer while (30 minutes maybe) but same thing happened eventually. When I clean the old drivers I Uninstall, restart, remove all leftover files on the PC (Program files, Program files (x86), Local, Roaming, and then the regedit (All NVIDIA directories I could after a google search). I then also used Guru3d Driver Uninstaller.
This is so annoying, could it be the card?

Edit: The card was out of the computer for two hours before I attempted with the other slot. Could it be overheating?

Yeah was gonna say seems you have a dead card on your hand or a dying one. It could be from the ram going bad and if you got nothing to lose and are brave give the baking thing a shot. How to: bake your GPU's. - EVGA Forums and if it is cause your cold solder on your ram is dying than yes this will fix it. I have done it successfully before but your card shows signs of a prob non ram issue and its just time to start over, that being said what do you have to lose unless you can RMA it of course.

UPDATE: just noticed after another reboot windows now hangs on the "preparing desktop screen" and getting the odd pc freeze. I removed the 2nd card, which seemed to be causing the problem. Im thinking a dead card possibly ? whats your thoughts ?

Remove the second card look for any dust build up in your pci-e slot, then if there is none try your first card in that slot as the only card in (it can be in any pci-e slot and if it slows down it's negligible at desktop anyways) if it works with the first card in the second slot only then your card could be bad, if it does not work then your slot is going or is bad. If it works then try the second card in the first slot only to rule out card vs slot. Check your SLI bridge for damage as well (poke marks or scratches on the inside.

Luck of the draw, to humidity, to bad qc to dust build up and frying it. It only takes some bad placed esd to kill that stuff. If it's under warranty that is a rma worthy thing. If it's not the gpu of course.
