No sound from media files after 'IObit' system improvement software

Hello everyone!

After using few software packages (listed below) I am unable to play sound in my media files. VLC displays video, but no sound. Winamp 'opens' the track but won't play. Windows media player gives 'Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file.' message. Youtube and other browser related sounds play just fine.

Unfortunately I don't have a recovery point to fall back to . There is a log file from Advanced system care with all changes done to the system but it is simply massive and I don't know what to look for.

I've used few IObit software packages:
Speed Up Slow Computer, Keep PC and Internet Secure, Freeware Download - IObit

-Advanced System Care 8 Free, (Spyware removal, registry fix, privacy sweep, junk files clean, internet boost, shortcuts fix, registry defrag, system optimization, security defence, disk scan, vulnerability fix, disk optimization),

-Driver Booster 2 Free, (updates all sorts of drivers)

-IObit Uninstaller 4, (a more convenient way to uninstal software, didn't uninstal anything media related though)

-IObit Malware Fighter 3 Free, (does what it says, didn't detect anything)


Does anyone have any idea what to do?

With those software packages, that most techies would avoid, its hard to say how much damage you have done to the OS and devices.

Although the sound is an issue, that is only one small area that is affected. My only suggestion is to do a complete reinstall.

Other forum sections would be more appropriate for this.

Is there any reasonable approach to fixing this besides re-instal of the OS?

The problem remains how much damage was done, and that is unknown.

Would the log help? It shows every change done to the system. And as for now everything else seems to work just fine so fixing the sound issue would be enough for now.

Should I be concerned that something might be getting/might get hairy in the background?

Do any of the iobit utilities have a undo feature?

That is as risky as running the iobit software in the first place. Win7 and up do not need tweaking utilities - they do more harm than good. There are a few from Piriform that I use, but that's it - no boosters, no speedups, no teakers .... just run Windows.

If there is an undo - look first, don't touch. Post what those bad utilities did and say they can undo BEFORE doing anything else.

SystemCare gives an option to 'rescue registry related changes'. It also lists recent windows update for a system restore but it is dated after the problem occurred.

Can you post what the utility tells you, or is that it - here's an option. If it provides details on what it will rescue, that might be helpful. The Windows update note is probably just a check for updates and report it to you - it makes the utility look smart. Don't worry about the Windows Update stuff - Windows will do that better anyway.

Please do post what the iobit thinks it will rescue. You might have to put a file in a zip folder to attach it

I agree, but it doesn't hurt to look. I'm guessing that the iobit utility exported registry changes before modifying the keys. It's a leap and a hope.

I don't think the iobit utility changed any software or drivers (could be wrong on that), but those are easy to correct.

I've zipped both 'details' of the registry rescue as well as original log.

I've mentioned the windows update option for the sake of options' completeness.

Thanks, this will take a while - there are a lot of changes. Providing as much information as possible is always good - thanks for the notation on Windows Update.

I'll try to compare the two files to see where a change might be affecting your machine. Bear in mind that I'm helping other members and also playing with Win10.

I'll post my findings when I have any. Do NOT apply the rescue just yet.

Another member might drop in and give you some other things to try - who knows, they might provide a solution while I'm reading the stuff you posted.

I'll catch up on posts the next time I get back to your thread.

Lots of keys, nothing jumped out that would cause the issue - I did not look up all of the GUI strings though.

Turn on System Protection
- right click Computer,
select System Protection,
select the C: drive and
press the [Configure] button
turn on system protection and
-set Disk space usage to about 10% of your disk.
press [Ok]
press the [Create] button

Then go ahead and use the iobit utility to restore the rescue registry.

Restart your machine
-> Does sound work?

I have found once IObit has been chewing on you system a Clean Install is the only answer.

If one tries to fix problems as they arise you will be forever.

Ok....next steps

• Manually run Windows Update
  Select all items offered, including any in the optional section
  download an install the updates
  
  
• Restart the machine in case any operations are pending
  
  
• Follow the instructions in:

  -> Ignore the title and references to Windows Update, these utilities are also useful for other issues.
  
  Read Step 4 carefully, many people misunderstand that they need to attach the entire CBS folder in a compressed folder (zip). If it's too large for the forum, just attach the entire CBS.log
  
  Skip Step 5 - that's a generic step more for people who jump in another thread and start posting the issue on their machine. It gets confusing - step 5 asks them to start a thread of their own.
