how to get around a forgotten administrator password

Trying to help a friend who has been given a laptop by her daughter. It is very slow and I would like to get rid of unwanted programmes and other clutter on it.

Every time I attempt to do anything, it pops up the admin box and askes for the admin password. I have spoken to the daughter but she cannot remember what she used.

How can I get into it and change the administrator without buying a programme to do it?

Many (most?) laptops can be returned to "out of the box" condition with a certain key press. This should remove all but the original system as sold. It DOES however give you back the factory bloatware that may have been previously removed.

Please list the exact make and model of the laptop so we can give proper advice.

Factory reset it, as suggested, or re install windows.

Wipe it out, start fresh. What operating system version is listed on the COA ?
