Hi, my first post is a result of my PC going awol. Based on my very recent experience my advice for anyone who believes they have a hard disk failure is to check your hardware first. In particular, with an HP Media Centre PC, check that the SATA from the hard disk to the motherboard is doing its job. After many inconsistent results attempting to use the system restore options available in Windows 7, each attempt threw up a different error message, I replaced the SATA cable when the Restore options could no longer see "C" drive and the System Image option could not find a place to put the image. Et voila, instant success!
So check your hardware, including cables etc first.
Best of luck.
