Solved SDD Showing Fuller All of a Sudden

My 128GB Samsung 840 Pro C: drive has been taking up about 65GB of 119GB formatted space (55GB free space) for the longest time. Recently, it started showing only 38.3GB of free space. When I checked properties in Disk Management, it shows used space is 80.3GB and the free space is 38.7GB.

I downloaded WinDirStat and got the following results:



It's saying the used space of C: is only 69.5GB which is better but that still seems a bit high, although one heck of a lot better than 80.3GB.

Does anyone have any idea what is causing my C:drive to read so high all of a sudden? Btw, the 24.8GB for <Files> is normal. 24GB is the hyberfil.sys file (I have 32GB RAM) and I need Hibernation enabled for my UPS to use to shut down my computer without losing any work in the event of a power outage. The remaining 0.8GB is the pagefile.sys.

Try Tree Size Free and see if it gives you a different total or a more useful display.

The typical culprit is space devoted to System Restore, whether you changed it or not. I think I heard that certain anti-virus packages have a way of interfering?

Run the above command and see if the results are outlandish.

Check how much space is used for System Restore.
Some people have an issue where Avast increases System Restore usage.

Try WizTree, it may help show where space is being used and they have a portable version

Try Tree Size Free and see if it gives you a different total or a more useful display.

Nothing significantly different with Tree Size Free.

The unknown may be the shadowstorage. Run the vssadmin list shadowstorage in an elevated command prompt and look for the Allocated.

If that is for system Restore, then it is interesting because I shut it off a long time ago.

Check if it's still turned off.

You can go to System Restore config area and delete all restore points. Not sure that will help as the bug in Avast may just continue making new restore points, regardless of your efforts.

I don't use Avast and haven't looked at their forums, but David says it's discussed there.

I heard about it on this forum somewhere in the last month.

Looks like Avast has a lightning campaign underway to fix the bug by June or July, per David.

In the meantime, you can:

A: enjoy

B: use another AV

C: rend your flesh in frustration

If you have Avast NG installed, uninstall it.
Or, wait till they fix the issue.

I cleaned out the restore points and reran the command prompt. Nada! So,

LF, you have to reduce your Maximum. This is the command:

vssadmin resize shadowstorage /For=C: /On=C: /MaxSize=3%

3% is my suggestion, you can, of course choose any value in % or GB. A restore point is appr. 500MB to 1GB in size.

Tried reducing it down to 0%; didn't work. Tried reducing it down to 1GB; didn't work.

I read the post on the Avast forums that DavidE indirectly linked, didn't understand a word of it (partially because apparently both paid and free versions were being discussed at the same time), so I posted with my version name and number, asking what to due with this FUBAR.

0% does not work but 1GB should work. Use the proposed 3%. You want some restore points after all.

Can you turn SR on in the GUI and adjust the slider to the minimum ?
Then turn it back off if you don't want it on.

I don't use Restore Points, I use Backup Images.
