Solved 2x BSODs in the last few days, whilst playing GTA V.

Hey there,

This is my first post here.

Basically, in the last week (Thursday 16th and last night) I've had two blue screens. The first thing I should say is that both of these occurred whilst I was playing the new PC release of Grand Theft Auto. In both cases I received the same message: "driver irql_less_or_not_equal", which I'm assuming has something to do with an out of date driver somewhere?

That's about all I can say about the blue screen messages themselves as I had no time to take down any of the information and because I've never experienced these issues on any machine. I do however have the dump files which I will upload.

When the second blue screen occurred last night I was concerned that it may have something to do with my new RAM, which I installed last Thursday. I've since realised however that the first of these incidents took place shortly after midnight on Thursday, and the RAM was installed in the evening later that day.

Out of interest, I'm using Windows Home Premium 64bit.

There is no other obvious symptoms of a problem with the PC, but I'm keen to find out the issue.

You had 2 dump files, both listing the same thing.

As you can see it is in need of updating. If you are not using it as a Raid Driver, you may be better of uninstalling it.

Sptd is your SCSI Pass Through Direct Host - Daemon Tools (known BSOD issues with Win7)

Please uninstall it, using these instructions

Daemon Tools, Alcohol 120% and Power Archiver Pro uses SCSI Pass Through Direct (SPTD), which is a well known cause of BSOD's.

1. Uninstall Daemon Tools.
2. Download the SPTD standalone installer and follow these steps:
- Double click the executable to open it
- Click the button shown below



If the button it is grayed out, as shown in the image, there is no more SPTD installation on your system, and you can just close the window.

That is your Realtek RTL8168D/8111D Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC and as you can tell it is way out of date too. Please update it.

After completing all of that, Please open an elevated command prompt ( click start, type cmd in the search box, right click on the cmd entry and select run as administrator) in the black box that opens, copy/paste sfc /scannow. If you decide to type it, notice the space between the sfc and the /. It is a system file checker which will scan your system files and attempt to correct any missing or corrupt files. What we want are the results to say windows found no integrity violations. If it says files were found but could not be repaired, close the box, reboot and run it again, after opening the administrative command prompt. You may have to reboot and run it three times for it to repair all system files. If it can't repair them after 3 reboots, let us know.

Let us know how your computer runs after that.

Thank you for your response. I followed the steps in the link provided, and I've included the .zip as an attachment to this reply.

I'm about to begin with the other steps. Is there a simple way to find and update the individual drivers that need to be replaced?

Edit, on the subject of finding drivers. I went to the Realtek website and got a hold of what I think is the correct set of drivers under Downloads > Computer Peripheral ICs > PC Audio Codecs > High Definition Audio Codecs > Software.

For the RAID, I searched software applicable to the Intel C600 chipset on Intel's website and found a list, the two latest of which appear to be the latest drivers for Linux followed by Windows under the description: "Intel® RSTe AHCI & SCU Software RAID driver for Windows* - This download provides support for the Intel® C600/C222/C224/C226 Chipsets on onboard SATA or SAS Controller in RSTe mode", latest version as of November 30th 2013.

The Realtek stuff is pretty nondescript but the Intel download sounds about right.

I can't easily get to the PSU physically as it's behind a shroud so to speak but if it's essential I'll turn the machine off and try my best to get at it. It's 650 or 750 watts if memory serves me, but it's been nearly three years since I acquired the PC in it's original state so the model and exact wattage escapes me.

As far as letting you know how the computer runs after this, if another Blue Screen occurs in weeks rather than days, can I reference this post in some way? That being said I don't believe I used the PC much at all in the days between the two occurrences so perhaps if there is still a problem it'll show up sooner rather than later.

You can always post right here. As far as Drivers, according to your System Specs, you have a Dell Motherboard so most of the drivers will come from there and should come from Dell. I believe you should be able to get them with the service code on your machine. This may help. Your machine is listed as an

Ok so I installed all of the suggested Intel chipset drivers from the Dell website and restarted. However in device manager the driver date and version remains the same.

The drivers mentioned in the Dump were the Intel Rapid Storage Driver (IRST) and the Realtek RTL8168D/8111D Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC. See if you can find updated drivers from them.

Hey there. I completely forgot about this thread. I've had a busy few weeks with my end of year final exam and various other deadlines.

Happy to report that I've had no further issues with BSOD since you helped me out. I can't remember exactly how I ended up finding the last of the drivers, I believe it was on Intel's website rather than with Dell. Anyway, it did the trick.
