High FPS = High Ping in games (solution anyone?)

I agree with all you guys. All we can do is wait. It look like no one that works in the Microsoft tech website wants to comment on this issue. I have even emailed a tech I met at the 7 break out event and he responded like a deer in the road blind. I sent him all the urls and comments from all over to see if he could find out something. So far 3 days later no answer from him. Its sad because we are not the silent majority that will be buying this. I also read somewhere that this issue could delay the release. I doubt that. SAD

From what I have been seeing MS is not to the only party here. Everyone has a different setup and there are thousands of different NIC cards out there. It looks like a driver issue for the nic is causing a increase. Remember most of us are loading Vista drivers until the hardware makers update their site with windows 7 drivers. Yes 7 is "like" Vista but is very different on how it controls hardware. It might take a month before we see true Win 7 drivers that lower lag issues, this is always the case with a new OS.
Ok with that being said I would like to address a few other items that could cause it. I myself saw a increase in my ping and lag times untill I updated my router firmware due to IPv6. Windows 7 tries to use IPv6 which is good but a lot of older routers dont like it and ISP haven't jumped totaly on the wagon for it. Just do a quick google run on Verizon and IPv6 to see the great items there. So check your router setup if it can not do IPv6 turn that off in your NIC settings and see if that has an affect on your ping.

As for the high FPS Im not sure how to advise on that one yet. I am still comparing that to XP/Vista and i am starting to think there are some parts of DirectX 11 that we have not been told about, just like when 10 came around and how it handls items along side the updated Aero themes in the back ground.

Well It definetly is driver issues. I just recieved an express card gig ethernet card, I needed it for my gig network. Well guess what, it works perfectly. The Realtek built in ethernet didnt work right nor did the mini PCIE Intel 3945 abg WIFI card, they both gave me the high pings. But the Belkin express card gig ethernet with the Marvel chip worked fine with the built in driver in 7. IT detected it flawlessly. Well I hope that settles it, its the drivers and incompatabilties. These issues should have been addressed already by Microsoft though....no excuse especially with the Intel wifi card.

This is how i have solved the problem..

I ran the updates on my Windows 7 RTM Professional x86 and now my Online Lag in Counter Strike Source has gone back to what it was when i was using xp. I dont have time to go through each update and work it out which one it was that fixed the issue.. But yay !!! I can now use "Windows7" and play online games at a normal Ping.

My advice to you guys out there having this problem is to install the windows updates april-october 09... these may help you solve your online game high ping issue...

let us know if this works ... cheers

Mighty thx for the info but that's the normal thing you should do and it was what I did from the beginning. Install 7 then update completely next install game and update the game then test. From there its been issues then drivers to try and fix the issues. Plus all the setting fixes people have tried. As I stated before, the Marvell gigibit express card ethernet adapter worked good for me plus alot of the lag in graphics with sound went away with the Sigmatel Vista driver from Gateway. My stock hardware was problems for me. Now it runs pretty good, just an occasional lag in the sound thing... but ok.

hi guys,

@ken
The updates were windows 7 updates.. and there were over 20 of them. When you run Microsoft windows 7 updates through control panel it didnt suggest any updates other than drivers etc...

So i did a google search for windows 7 updates april-october and found them through other means... When i installed them, there over 20 updates... try this !

@ashton
glad it is starting to come together. I think also as microsoft releases new drivers etc.. things will start to iron out in the system..

I remember going onto Win7 RC 7100 back when it was first released. I am a big TF2 gamer and was slightly annoyed when I first got into some servers and ended up with about 100ms higher than what I had prior to Win7 (XP SP3).

ashton, Correct me if I am wrong, but I dont recall reading anywhere that you updated your Mobo Drivers from the Win7 ones? Just because your hardware 'works' with the Win7 drivers doesnt mean its going to work optimally. All drivers should be updated to the latest from the manufacturor.

Anyway, the thing that resloved my higher than normal pings was disabling the Home/Private Windows firewall. Smooth sailing from there and havnt had a problem since.

I have heard of problems with the Homegroup thing that was added. you might be able to disable the homegroup (if your not networking with it) and see if that changes anything. (I have not had this problem so it is just an un-educated guess)

Hmm

I understand that this thread is old, But for those of you that still have these issues there is a few things you should try...

1. Go to your NIC properties and turn off power management options.

2. Down load DPC Latency Checker and Latancymon.(These will help you find the processes/drivers that might be slowing down your CPU due to incompatibility)

3. Check for spyware with programs like Spybot search and destroy.

4. Also check your router/modem settings.

If any of these things dont work..... Then i guess you have a bigger issue then most people can explain.
