Update from Win7 32bit to Win10 64bit possible?

Hi all,

I currently have a laptop with Win7 Professional 32bit, I read that it's possible to update it to Win10 without having to format the hard drive, is that correct?
And will it be possible to upgrade to a Win10 64bit version as well?

you should be able to update win7 to win10 w/o losing anything. make an image backup & image recovery cd first justincase. a lot depends on the specs of the laptop.

you need a multi core processor for windows x64 & you should have a fair amount of memory, ie. 4gb.

From what i know it's never been possible to update from 32 Bit to 64 Bit.
A clean install is needed for that change.
Does W10 have some new magic to allow a 32 to 64 bit update ???
I don't know, and i doubt it.

Right now Win 10 is not "finalized", it's a work in progress.
If you update to W10 (WTP) now you will be using a pre-beta OS.
There is no guarantee of stability, problems, etc.

There has been a lot of discussion about how the "free W7/8 to W10" will work.
I don't think anyone knows for sure, until MS explains it.
Do we have to do an "OS update", or can we do a "clean install" ... ???

I've got a W7 32 Bit OS on my test box I'd like to update to the free W10 64 Bit, but I'm not sure what is possible from everything I've read.
Less than 4 GB Ram, i would use 32 Bit.

No, you can`t go from 32 to 64 bit without doing a clean install.

What I would do is shrink C in Disk Mgmt, then Clean Install Windows 10 Technical Preview
to a Dual Boot so you can compare and still have a stable OS until closer to the Windows 10 release date. Partition or Volume - Shrink

By booting the 10 installer you can install 64 bit Windows 10 if you want alongside 32 bit Windows 7. I would only install 64 bit if you have 3 gb or more RAM and a modern processor.

What i would do is follow Greg's help/instructions/advice/suggestions ...
Greg is the most experienced and knowledgeable install expert i know of in SF.

I had 2 local folks ask me for help yesterday.
