Windows 10 will kill off 'Patch Tuesday' as Microsoft pushes constant stream of updates

Windows 10 will mean the death of Patch Tuesday, Microsoft executives said this week, as Microsoft moves to a steady stream of patches that aren’t confined to one particular day.

At the Ignite conference this week, Terry Myerson, Microsoft’s executive vice president of operating systems, promised a “steady stream of innovation over time every month.” Microsoft will not be delivering updates on a single day of the month, he said, but as Microsoft prepares them and rolls them out.

This is similar to what Cakewalk Sonar (recording studio software) is doing. Sonar has went to a subscription plan, which some think Microsoft will ultimately do with Windows, and they generally issue updates around the end of the month, but if its important enough an update can come at any time.

Past time to stop using M$ services = MSE and Internet explorer
Might turn off updates all together if the wu search errors again just because KB2990214 isn't installed.

Great - installing the updates brings me out in a nervous sweat as it is for fear of something bricking. At least before it was only once a month, now it's going to be virtually every other day I guess.

I imagine a good many will keep automatic updates unchecked (as long as MS allows us to, that is) and will then run the updates once a month after the dust has settled. In recent months MS has lost the credibility that would enable us to react to important and critical updates by installing them immediately. "Pause, and take stock" is the mantra of the day so far as Windows Updates are concerned.

I hope your right and allows automatic updating to remain unchecked. That would be awful to force installation on us on shutdown. I'd like to install at my own pace or at least be ready for it .ie. have an hour or two spare to babysit the process, test everything is ok by doing a reboot.

I have Windows Updates set to notify me when updates are available but let me choose when to download and install them. This morning, when I turned on my monitors, my computer was at the login screen, indicating that it had rebooted overnight. After reading this thread, I checked Windows Updates to see if mayhap new updates had been installed. A Windows Defender definitions update had installed itself (normally, those don't need a reboot). The other updates haven't shown up yet (normally, they do not until Wednesday morning). Weird! And I'm kinda P.O.ed about the autoupdate!

I am sure there will be a 3rd party tweak for windows 10 home edition to disable or skip updates.

There is one tweak I know of. You could also turn on the metered connection even if you don't have one. This seems to stop some stuff from downloading.

Well, that means though they will have more people with problems if there's a bug with a update. That just made me not want to use upgrade from Win7/Win8 to Windows 10 even more. If it is true that this could be disabled on the Pro edition, I'd rather get it on a new computer using Windows 10 Pro.

That is odd. Did you get that recent update for Windows Defender software, that could of turned windows defender auto updates back on? I got a software update for Microsoft Secuirty essentials.

I know you won't like windows 10, they are going to force at least the home user to autoupdate if I interpreted this article correctly

Seeing as you have Avast installed that would have defender disabled :/

All three of the computers I have set up (I have a third notebook I haven't fired up yet) use Avast free and all of them still have Windows Defender enabled.

If Defender installs itself and reboots my computer next month, I'm shutting it off. I have processes running at night, now including recording OTA TV movies, that having my computer essentially shut down would disrupt.

Also as far as I am concerned Ten has actually got worse the more they work on it. Looks horrible, 2 color icons, they just had to move everything from control panel to settings and are selling it with a stupid talking demigod, a long lost relative of clippy. Why would anyone who has Windows 7 downgrade to Ten? I have given it enough time, they have been told numerous times what the computing public wants and they are still pressing ahead with the Metroification and Tabletization model even though tablets are in decline and the mobile market is saturated.
Still what do I know.....I told them Vista would not work on hardware they recommended, I told them Windows 8 would not work with a tiles menu and no easy navigation clues (and no end of other things) and I have told them numerous stuff about Windows 10 and only heard back on one thing which they declined to reinstate.

I was referring to the fact that they appear to be so keen to deter people from using Windows 10 and keep Windows 7 as the universally preferred OS that one would think they held shares in Windows 7.

I just went to change the settings on Windows Update and saw something I hadn't seen before. I have had the thing set to download updates, but let me install them manually. I changed the setting to notify me about updates and let me download them. While I was checking the other settings, the download option automatically changed to never check for updates before I could click OK. It did it twice, but I finally got it clicked OK before it could change. When I went back in it was OK. Just thought it was strange.

Avast doesn't disable Windows Defender on my PC either.

AVG used to disable Windows Defender on my PC (and still does in my W7 VMs).
