How to tell my SSD speed - should I upgrade mobos?

I have an Asus mobo that allows 3/mbs and I know that SSDs can/should be running at 6/mbs - so that right there may want me to upgrade, but my computer is still surprisingly fast for how old it is and without it being over clocked.

How can I tell how fast my new SSD is interacting with the mobo to see it if it's even running at the 3/mbs or if it's less?

If it's not even doing 3/mbs I will probably just upgrade at this time to take full advantage of the speed of a new mobo & 5820k Hexacore. (vs my 6600 quad core)

It depends on the speed of your SSD. You can also get a hardware SATA card that would allow you to get the 6gb/s over PCIE. Find the speed of the drive: Best SSD 2015 - 86 Charts - UserBenchmark

I use CrystalDiskMark to find the different speeds of my specific drive: Disk Mark
The portable version is the best.

At this point since i just bought two Samsung 850 pros, I dont want to spend more on PCI card SSDs and would almost rather just upgrade mobo & processor if my speeds really suck with my current mobo/processor

I read where this program writes a 1gb file for the test, how do I go about deleting this 1gb file?

The file used is deleted automatically. No idea why in German(?).

Now, coming to the main issue. Your drives are working in ide mode (notice red text pciide?).
- enable ahci drivers in registry http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/61869-ahci-enable-windows-7-vista.html
- move the SSDs to a SATA3 port (check motherboard manual)
- in BIOS - set the controller SSDs are attached to - SATA operation mode: AHCI

I think that might be one of the problems, I tried changing it from IDE in my Asus bios, but I have no AHCI as an option. And as far as I know I have the most up to date version of my mobos bios.

Any way to force the AHCI option into bios specifically? - ahh wait, I see you gave me a possible walk-thru, going to read it now.

The SSD is already hooked up via SATA cable to the SATA port.

Do those test scores suck overall for speed based on the 3/gbs my mobo is capable of? I assume changing it to AHCI will make it perform faster overall?

I've been running it with an Intel quad core 6600 and 8gb of ram with 2 dual video cards for a 3 monitor setup. Been one hell of a rig for me over the years and I never even overclocked it.

I realize a new system is the best/logical idea, but this old beast still has some life in it and if I can get a bit more speed for just a while longer, it will still do everything I need.

If I were to upgrade now I would get an Intel 5820k & x99 mobo - if I'm going to upgrade, I want to make it worth it and have it last as long as this one did/is.

So I edited those two values in Regedit to 0 and restarted my computer, but Bios is still not showing an ACHI option to switch it from IDE.

Any ideas?

Oh Yea the ASUS sabertooth x99 is a nice board just got one,
I got the i7 5930k though 6 core quite a deal at Micro Center still @ 499.99us
Ram is expensive no doubt but I'm guessing it's worth it for the future games
I got the corsair dominator platinum 2666mhz just because I'm insane
Plus that is close to what the board was tested with
I wish I could of sprung for the i7 5960x damn it

Never mind the benchmark---if you can't tell the difference and aren't impressed, get rid of the SSDs.

If you are impressed, the benchmarks don't much matter.

The access time is good.

The alignment is good.

The overall score is relatively low, but I don't know what you should realistically expect on that hardware.

Here's a benchmark of my old Intel 320 series SSD on a socket 1155 motherboard with 3.0 ports. Not a lot different from yours. I was impressed when I bought it and can't tell the difference with the new Crucial SSD I bought to replace it.

Yeah my mobo only has SATA II, but I would still like to try and run it in RAID/ACHI mode to get some more speed.

I've downloaded the ACHI/RAID driver from asus for my mobo, but need help installing it. Anyone have a walk through or now what I'm supposed to do with this asus zipped file?

I don`t think what you`ve downloaded is a driver, if it is then just click setup.

AHCI is an option in the bios, either you have it or you don`t.
