Why Upgrade to Windows 10?

I'm eligable for the free update to Windows 10 and am unsure as to whether to go for it or not. My Windows 7 installation works flawlessly and I'm happy with it. Are there any reasons to/or not to upgrade? I can't see many benefits. I tried Windows 8/.1 for a while and hated it. The start screen and charm bar etc was pointless on the desktop.

Well I've used both and 10 is ? like you said "pointless on a desktop" pretty much sums it up what 10 is
I believe 8.1 is a bit better start screen is better than the new start button.

There's no rush you can add 10tp in a v-m using VMware and take a look see before deciding
Unless you plan on using a M$ account.. to use Cortana/ Bing/ xbox/....... it is pretty much nothing there as in improvements imho
But check it out some people like it and some do not :/

You loose Windows Media Center. That's enough to kill the upgrade for me as I have a TV card and don't like other software options necessary to use it. MS will give you a free DVD player instead. Whoopee! I also couldn't find Stereo Mix so that kills a few options for me on my turntable. SM may be there somewhere but I couldn't find it in the mish-mash of system stick figures they call menu icons.

And what the heck is a "Hamburger Menu"? As I said of Windows 8TP, the UI looks like is was stolen from a Mickey-D cash register. I guess MS tried to make the OS idiot proof as well. In doing so, MS has stripped and gutted the features, removed the ability to customize the look and feel and replaced the numerous check-box options with a few (very few) On-Off Slide Switches for mouseless (mindless) users. The system is locked down for the average user and easy install of custom software has been replaced with a "store" of limited value to real users.

Got to argue that Mike. I've been using 10 exclusively for the last four days and I'm doing everything I do in 7 without noticing any difference. It's certainly not pointless on a desktop, I understand you may not like it but don't make statements like that that simply aren't true. I'm as big a 7 fan as you can get, but I really, really like 10 too. It doesn't matter which OS I boot into, I can use my PC and all of my programs seamlessly with either.

There are many reasons to upgrade to 10. One significant reason is price / cost. With a free upgrade, you save the cost of buying a retail copy. The other significant reason is synchronization to devices if that is what you like or need. I plan to grab a copy of the free upgrade but will continue to use 7 - 8.0 - 8.1.1 and 10 on separate SSDs.

After finding a little program that moves the orb to the center or to the right side of the taskbar,
windows 7 does what I need. Streaming video in a browser is nice since the stream does not get suspended as it does in a "modern" app unless the "app" is snapped or can or has the option to run in the background.

The classic mode and customization options available in 7 do not exist in 8.x or 10.x
I like to be able to resize scroll bars and close X's. It's nice to be able to quickly change explorer fonts although there is a 3rd party program that can change explorer fonts in 8 or 10.

If you didn`t like 8, you won`t like 10.

If you like your Windows 7 install, I see no reason to go with 10

Anyone could ignore the "store" in 10 but that program is in 8. (not 7)
8 and 10 are touch centric. 10 is a hybrid desktop mixed with touch options. (not 7)
Cortana in 10 and integrated Bing search in 8.1,
both of which can be disabled, are a part of the MS egosystem. (not 7)

10 and 8 use MS accounts and synchronization. (not 7)

The word "tile" or "metro / modern app" doesn't exist in 7.

10 will be great (or is), 8.x will be preferred by many for what it offers.
7 will remain only as long as users are ok being unsupported.

At least 7 doesn't look like a cell phone display.
Start menu on 7 is perfect why is it not an option in 10 when on a desktop makes zero sense.

In the cases that most of you are referencing are aesthetics.

I moved from Windows 7 to 8 purely for the performance increase that it offers, and yes there are huge performance benefits. However i've modded my Windows8 to be aesthetically the same as windows 7.

So long as that option is there, no matter if it is third party or vendor, I will most likely move to 10.

You can moan all you like about the Tiles / Metro / Charms, what you don't realise is that you can disable most of them through the registry anyway. If you are looking for a system that brings performance increases and functionality (DX12), then surely you can take the time to learn how to personalise the machine to you?

Also, as a point the Charms bar does not exist in Win10 desktop, however it can be accessed through touchsmart media by swiping still.

Heck, i've got Facial recognition on my Win8 desktop which has been added as a default in Win10 with Hello!


Stop looking at the things you can change, and start looking at the work that MS has actually done under the hood.


Have a read through of Windows 10 vs Windows 7: Should you upgrade? and it will actually highlight some decent improvements compared to Windows 7, a few were available in Win8 but those have also been improved.

The point is the default install and easy to find options,

Why is M$ throwing users to the third party wolves.
