Next Thursday I'll be upgrading from Vista64 to Windows 7. I plan to do an upgrade to test things out. After verifying which applications/utilities work or don't work, I'll be daring and bold and would like to do a clean install.

Will this be possible using the the upgrade disk I will receive on Oct. 22?

It should be. The disc itself contains Windows 7 (the complete OS).

I was curious about this myself. So, how do you verify that you own a legitimate version of Vista to upgrade from? Vista came with my pcs, but I ditched them as soon as the first win7 leaks appeared.

Thanks to all that replied.

Theog;
If I have to re-install Vista64 then I should consider a dual boot. Do you know if this option allows for the clean install after the initial upgrade?

If I have to re-install Vista64 then I should consider a dual boot.

According to the EULA, you're not allowed to use the qualifying OS anymore (the version of Windows you upgraded from). Except if you need to reinstall Windows 7 again in the future.

EDIT - of course you could probably still use Vista so long as you don't use 7. In other words you're not supposed to be using them both. Whether or not a dual boot actually violates the license agreement, I don't know (technically you wouldn't be using them both at the same time, as you'd need to reboot to get to the other OS). It seems like a bit of a gray area.

All of my systems still run fastest on XP 32-bit for the most part. Win7 is fun to play with, but I still prefer XP for raw speed, security, and functionality.
I want the cleanest possible install so I am going to install to a formatted partition rather than overwrite the upgraded XP/Vista. But, since I don't want XP/Vista after it is upgraded, and the XP/Vista has to be on the first partition to boot and run the upgrade, then I am considering installing the upgrade to a second formatted HDD.

On my laptops, I'm considering copying the XP/VIsta image to an external HDD and setting it to boot, then installing the upgrade to formatted HDD.

Does anyone have any other ideas how to get a formatted upgrade install.

Now you have me thinking. I plan on doing a clean install anyway. Can I have my current OS on one hard drive, install Windows 7 on a second hard drive, then remove the old one and go from there?

Yes:

"The custom install can be directed to a different partition or drive than the one the qualifying install is located on. This functionality has always been possible when using Windows Upgrade packs."

XP upgrade to win7 using a new hard drive

I plan to plug in a second HDD, format Primary, install Win7 from XP desktop on first HDD, after install change cables (or boot order in BIOS), mark active and run Startup Repair.
